Old School Decks and Ideas for Pokemon TCG
About Me:
My username is Alazor and I am not a World Champion but have played pokemon cards for over a decade. I like to post good retro deck content on my site from some of the early sets especially. My real name is david Bennett and take interest in Math, Engineering, and Ping-Pong among other things. Some of these decks I've tested on the Pokemon TCG gameboy game, others in on-line tournaments, and finally, some are popular lists that have either beaten me or are popular on TCGone.

Intro (Not as important, you can skip this!):
Mama always said to tell the Truth and she was right. Alakazam is too smart with an IQ of 5000 to be tricked. And doesn't that stink? Dark Vileplume will make sure of that, Dark Vileplume means you're grounded. No supporters, no trainers, no tools, no stadiums (except your room). You pet your pet Tentacool goodnight and fall asleep to the sound of a singing Jigglypuff. You wake up at the pokemon center with some Chansey there and some Doduo that ran away from Imakuni.

Strategy:
Either beat down/stall with Wigglytuff and Chansey early game while you set up your Dark Vileplume and Alakazam. Wigglytuff's sleep condition ensures that your opponent can't attack once in a while, while you hit for 60. That is if they themselves don't play Full Heal energy. Keep on hitting with Wigglytuff the rest of the game. If you notice that you have one prize left and need the extra damage, you can hit with Dodrio for Rage for 70 or if Chansey has the energy, then for 80. Challenge! is there in case you can trick the opponent into setting up Wigglytuff quick.
Evolve Dark Vileplume early if you need to, if you think you can manage to get Dark Gloom and Dodrio benched and Dark Vileplume active. Confuse Dark Vileplume with Dark Gloom's Pokemon Power: Pollen Stench, this will then shut down Dark Vileplume's Pokemon Power: Hayfever, which will allow you to play trainers and evolve Abra into Alakazam. Play Full Heal Energy on Dark Vileplume afterward, and then retreat (or play Switch).
If you are losing somehow and need a way to set back up, send up Mr.Mime and heal up to 20 damage using Tentacool's Cowardice Pokemon Power.
The Strategy (for the revised deck):
The main attacker is Wigglytuff. The other attackers such as Gastly, Scyther, Lickitung, and Chansey also use resistance to counter other decks while Dark Vileplume stops trainers and Alakazam moves damage counters away from the active pokemon. With its Curse Pokemon Power, Gengar gets pokemon late game by moving the opponent's damage counters. Gastly's energy conversion gets energy back from the discard pile.
Slowpoke gets trainers from the discard pile with its Scavenge attack. Dark Slowbro (Rocket) can OHKO an opposing Gust of Wind'd Alakazam or Muk (Fossil) <shutting down their Pokemon Powers possibly> on a heads coin flip. Another way to use Dark Slowbro is Dark Slowbro's Pokemon Power to get back up to 3 pokemon in the discard pile into the hand and re-set back up very quickly. Chansey and Lickitung are also there to help stall. Alakazam is there to keep pokemon alive.
Sometimes, you make Dark Vileplume active to use trainers by using Drowzee (Team Rocket's) Hypnosis Pokemon Power. Then, play the trainers like Nightly Garbage Run or Gust of Wind or Pokemon Center and then use the trainer Switch at the end, bench Dark Vileplume and then your opponent cannot use trainers during their turn. And even if you get tails - the opponent's active pokemon may stay asleep - granted they do not have a Snorlax (Jungle) active or a Full Heal Energy in their hand. They may even play Dragonite (Fossil) with Dodrio (Jungle) - and that would get around that too. But, generally a chance at getting the opponent's active asleep is not a bad thing.
The goal is to take advantage of status conditions and resistances on various pokemon that can cause the opponent to deck out. Gengar (Fossil) allows you to take multiple prizes in the end game - so you might draw prizes before your deck out!
Pokemon: 21
Trainers: 24
Energy: 15
4 Double Colorless Energy (BS 96)
Super Energy Removal (Base Set)
Rocket's Sneak Attack (Rocket)
Imposter Oak's Revenge (Rocket)
Goop Gas Attack (Team Rocket) - for Aerodactyl
Ditto (Fossil) - good against Fossil Magmar
Here Comes Team Rocket! (Rocket)
Base - Gym Side Deck Extras:
Diglett (Team Rocket) - for Rocket's Zapdos
Strategy:
Fill your bench up and attack with Wigglytuff. Then, evolve the Alakazam and Dark Vileplume. Snorlax is a strong back-up attacker with Psychic and status condition resistance. You could tech in a Psyduck (Fossil) instead of Rocket’s Sneak Attack and use that as a starting pokemon. Mr. Mime with Tentacool can stall until the opponent decks out. Or, even Lickitung with Tentacool.
If playing a Muk deck, don’t evolve and don’t play Snorlax until later. You can Scavenge a Gust of Wind with Slowpoke and then have a 50% chance of knocking out Muk with Dark Slowbro after you evolve it. Dark Slowbro lets you burn through your deck quickly and get discarded pokemon in your hand vs. Nightly Garbage Run, which makes you rely more on top decking against non-Muk decks.
Gastly is used to get energy back from the discard mid-game and to counter cards like Hitmonchan when your Dark Vileplume – and hopefully – Alakazam are in play. Gastly also evolves into Gengar. Scyther is a counter to Aerodactyl and maybe even Hitmonchan.
Gengar can use Curse to knock out pokemon that have 10 hp left. Rainbow Energy is there to free up bench space of damaged pokemon that need to leave play after using Alakazam’s Damage Swap and also to ensure that almost any pokemon can attack if needed.
Drowzee is used with a single Dark Vileplume in play and active or when having a Snorlax active. Drowzee also gets past an opposing Mr. Mime’s Invisible Wall.

You can print these posters laminated at a local office shop like Staples on Arch D sized paper.
Stall with the big basics. Attach 1 energy to most pokemon unless attacking. Venusaur, Chansey, and Kangaskhan are the big hitters. Alakazam's Damage Swap pairs really well with Energy Trans to keep those energies in play!
Strategy:
Attack and stall with Scythers, while getting out Nidokings and 2 Nidoqueens. After that, attack with Nidoqueen's Boyfriends attack to dish out up to 100 damage for a grass and colorless energy! If Scythers get knocked out, you can still attack with Nidoking and use Switches to stall a little more. Nidoking's Toxic is a nice attack which can deal damage, even after you can't attack (after using Toxic of course!). Psyduck can also stall and then you can play a follow up Lass.
Deck List:
Strategy:
The strategy of Bored Control is board control, meaning that Ninetails' Lure attack can get your oppponent's undesirable Defending Pokemon active pokemon active and Scyther (Jungle) thanks to its free retreat cost makes it more possible to keep the active you want – still active. Alakazam's Damage Swap moves damage counters almost anywhere on your pokemon, keeping your deck in “control”. The main attacker is Ninetails, which can deal 80 damage consistently due to its Fire Blast attack. Move damage counters to the bench if you need to.
Deck List:
Pokemon: 20
Trainers: 25
Energy: 15
Strategy:
Use Pidgeot's Hurricane and return their lone pokemon to their hand by turn 2. If that does not work, you can alternate pokemon by retreating Pidgeot and Scythers while wearing them down hitting for 20-30 damage per turn. Pluspowers are used with Hurricane in case of emergency need to knock out the defending pokemon. Use Super Energy Removal/Energy Removal with Hurricane and Gust of Wind to bring energy to the discard pile or energy and evolutions out of play, respectively. You might get a lone Clefairy start, in that case, use Gust of Wind attempting to knock out pokemon with strong attacks, but hit points that are lower relative to their attack damage potential. If they power up, attack with Pidgeot's Hurricane and they have to start all over.
Here's the deck list:
Pokemon: 14
Trainers: 30
Energy: 16
Strategy:
Draw cards with Bill, Professor Oak, and Kangaskhan's Fetch attack to set up strategy. Attack early with Zapdos and Hitmonchan while setting up Hitmonlee and Wigglytuff for mid-to-late game. GB Zapdos uses its Pokemon Power to deal 30 damage to a random pokemon when you play it onto your bench. Try to drop Zapdos early, when your bench is not as full and use Scoop Up. If you are successful, you could draw up to 3 prizes in one turn! Wigglytuff holds this deck together. Wigglytuff puts the defending pokemon to sleep to bide some time and can hit for 60 and with Pluspower, it hits the magic number of 70. Kangaskhan's Fetch with Pokemon Center and Scoop Up is broken. Lass is there so you won't deck out.

Strategy:
This a common/uncommon deck for the Base Set - Fossil format. Magmar and Lickitung rely on coin flips to keep your opponent from attacking. Meanwhile, add fire energy to Arcanine to take the remaining prizes. Energy Removal stops your opponent from attaching energy to their pokemon while they cannot attack your active. Pluspower lets you hit up to 100 damage with Arcanine's Take Down attack. This deck can also attempt to deck out the opponent.

Strategy:
Knock out Muk or Grimer before setting up Alakazam with Mewtwo Promo. You can use the Mewtwo Promo and Mr. Fuji combination to stall even longer.
Deck List:
Strategy:
Stall and then use Moltres late game.
Deck List:
Strategy:
Stall with paralyzing attacks with Electabuzz and Lickitung. Electabuzz is helpful against Raindance, Psyduck, and Dodrio by hitting them for weakness. Scyther covers the gaping fighting weakness with its fighting resistance. Magmar stalls as well. Chansey is there to collect a few prizes in the end game.
Deck List:
Strategy:
Named after and inspired by the Larry Elder incident, where he almost got hit by an egg a woman threw at him while she was wearing a gorilla mask. I do not approve such actions, however it is how I came up with this idea. It's more of a fun deck.
Mankey looks for what you need to know with its Pokemon Power and Primeape can repeatedly use its Tantrum attack with the trainer Full Heal. Exeggutor can simply do a lot of damage if it has a lot of energy attached to it. It could use some Dittos and Scythers though and maybe a Pokemon Trader or two.

The strategy is to use supporters and technical machines to draw cards and set-up. The Jumpluff is used to stall, while the Furret is used to get special energies out primarily for Scizor. Scizor's Heavy Metal usually finishes things off. Warp Energy is used with Scizor with a benched Jumpluff to retreat and get back in action with Scizor. Rainbow Energy could be used with Scizor or Jumpluff depending on the situation. Power Charge can get energies back. You could play more Rainbow Energies with Star Piece - if needed.
Notable techs: Octillery (Aquapolis).
Use Psyduck to lock trainers when your opponent's deck is near zero. Moltres can have fire energies on it to ensure deck out. Mew with Pluspower counters the opponent's Mewtwo (WBSP 3). Lickitung ensures that your opponent will deck out before taking all 6 prizes. Scyther is free retreat to put up as an active in case there are no pokemon. Energy Removal and Super Energy Removal remove energies so they cannot do much. Mr. Fuji is used with Mewtwo to get fire energies back in the deck and at the same time used to power up a Moltres.
Use Blastoise as the main attacker. Clefable is the back-up attacker. Muk (Fossil) is used to get past Mr. Mime (Jungle), or things like Dragonite (Fossil) when the opponent is trying to counter Lickitung (Jungle). Grimer can act like a mini-Lickitung without the fighting weakness. When you are done with Muk, you can use Scoop Up. Sometimes it may be advantageous to Scoop Up Blastoise, Lickitung, or Clefable as well. Chansey can also attack and Psyduck just locks trainers with Headache. Use Gambler as a backup Oak, or if you have a very bad hand, or if you need to avoid decking out!
Pokemon: 21
Trainers: 25
Energy: 16
Strategy:
One strategy against Lickitung is to confuse your opponent's Lickitung, then use Scoop Up the next turn, promote a Psyduck to use Headache. This puts your opponent's Lickitung in a bind to either retreat or attack in confusion. Gastly gets energies back for Wigglytuff and Ditto. Slowbro can be used for Wigglytuff to last a little longer. Haunter stalls, as does Lickitung, as does Chansey, as does Mr. Mime. Scyther is an Aerodactyl counter. Slowpoke gets trainers back in the hand. Gengar's Curse pokemon power is especially helpful against things like Mr. Mime.
Deck list:
Drowzee's Pokemon Power makes things like Mr. Mime (Jungle) vulnerable to an OHKO. It can also be useful to shut down Dark Vileplume's Hayfever pokemon power and then play a Switch after playing all your trainers.
Another way to bypass Mr. Mime's or Aerodactyl's pokemon power for a turn.
Dark Gloom - Similar to Drowzee (Team Rocket)
Dark Dragonair - gets evolutions out fast!
Dark Dragonite - gets two basics out fast.
Dark Slowbro - gets any 3 basic pokemon out of the discard pile. Has a 50/50 chance of OHKOing Mewtwo (Promo), Ditto (Fossil), Alakazam (Base Set), or Muk (Fossil).
Oddish (Team Rocket) - auto-poison for a grass energy is amazing!
Full Heal Energy - good in a format where status conditions are king.

This EX Block deck is a mix of two World Championship decks both in the EX Block format:
Legendary Ascent and Mewtric . Together they form a new deck I call NewTric! Obviously, the deck can be tweaked, but the strategy is to spread damage while using Manectric's disconnect. POW! Hand Extension might be a good addition - even though it is not in this deck list.

Top trainers to use Computer Search if you have no other cards in your hand.(Base – Fossil)
1. Professor Oak – gets you a fresh hand of 7 cards.
2. Lass – if your opponent has a lot of Energy Removal or Super Energy Removal cards it goes back to their deck and you might still have a chance
3. Gambler – kinda like a risky back-up Professor Oak
4. Bill – draw 2 cards – this is a hard choice, because depending on the field, just an Energy Removal or a Gust of Wind could also be a viable option
