History
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one of the most iconic franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite having some of the biggest names in cricket, the team is known for its passionate fanbase, thrilling matches, and a roller-coaster journey filled with ups and downs. Here’s an overview of RCB’s history from its inception to recent times.
Foundation and Ownership
RCB was esbtablished in 2008 as part of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) inaugural season. The franchise was initially purchased by Vijay Mallya, the chairman of United Spirits, for a price of around US $111.6 million. This made RCB one of the most expensive teams during the first season's franchise auction.
Initial Ownership: RCB was owned by United Spirits under the guidance of Vijay Mallya, who remained a prominent face of the franchise for several years.
Diageo's Acquisition: In 2013, British beverage giant Diageo acquired a controlling stake in United Spirits. With this, Diageo indirectly became the owner of RCB, and Mallya's association with the franchise ended soon after due to legal and financial troubles.
Current Structure: Today, Royal Challengers Bangalore is officially owned and managed by United Spirits Limited (USL), with Diageo as the parent company. Diageo has worked to bring stability to RCB’s management, building a franchise that consistently remains one of the most followed and commercially successful teams in the IPL.

Early Years and Performances
Founding and Early Years (2008-2010)
RCB was founded in 2008, with United Spirits purchasing the franchise for $111.6 million. Vijay Mallya, the owner, named the team after his brand Royal Challenge, setting high expectations from the start. The team struggled initially, finishing seventh out of eight teams in the inaugural season under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. Anil Kumble took over as captain in 2009, and RCB reached the final, though they were defeated by Deccan Chargers.
Rise and the Kohli Era (2011-2016)
RCB made a major acquisition in 2011 by signing Chris Gayle, who went on to become one of IPL’s most explosive players. Gayle, along with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers formed a power-packed batting trio that defined the team’s identity. Under Kohli’s captaincy from 2013, RCB became a more competitive team. However, inconsistency plagued them, with both brilliant performances and disappointing seasons.
RCB reached the finals in 2011 and 2016, with the 2016 season seeing Kohli score a record-breaking 973 runs, including four centuries. Despite this, they lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The Struggles and Search for Consistency (2017-2019)
The team faced tough times between 2017 and 2019, finishing near the bottom of the points table. Injuries, poor form, and a reliance on a few star players led to inconsistent performances. RCB continued to struggle to find a balance in their squad, especially with the bowling attack often being a weak link.
Revival and New Strategies (2020-Present)
IPL 2020:
RCB finished in the top 4 and qualified for the playoffs, showcasing a balanced team performance. They played 15 matches, winning 8 and losing 7, ultimately reaching the Eliminator but were knocked out by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
IPL 2021: RCB had a strong season in 2021, finishing third on the points table. They played 14 matches, winning 9 and losing 5. They reached the Eliminator but were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders, ending their campaign in the playoffs.
IPL 2022: RCB continued their playoff streak, finishing in 4th place after a mixed season. They played 16 matches, winning 8 and losing 6, qualifying for the Qualifiers. However, they were eliminated in the Qualifier 2 by Rajasthan Royals, failing to make it to the finals.
IPL 2023: RCB had a disappointing run in 2023, finishing 6th in the league stage with a record of 7 wins and 7 losses out of 14 matches. Despite a strong squad, they failed to secure a playoff spot.
IPL 2024: In IPL 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a strong start, securing a few early wins but faced challenges as the season progressed. Despite excellent performances, such as explosive batting from Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, and impactful contributions from players like Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell, RCB struggled in the latter half of the league stages. Their campaign was marked by a mix of dominant wins and narrow losses, but they managed to reach the playoffs.
One of the highlights of their season was a dominant performance in a crucial match against Gujarat Titans, where RCB successfully defended a total, thanks to a strong team effort. However, in the Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals, RCB’s campaign ended with a defeat, cutting their journey short.
