The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Del Carmen extends its deepest gratitude to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) for its unwavering support in advancing sustainability through three major engagement areas under the Plastics Free Cities Program.
This initiative is part of the broader "Solutions for the Future in the Islands of Palawan, Northern Leyte, and Siargao" program, where WWF Netherlands and WWF Red Cross collaborate to implement and upscale Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the Philippines. LGU Del Carmen is proud to be one of the beneficiaries of this transformative project.
As part of the Plastic Smart Cities initiative—a WWF-led agenda to eliminate plastic pollution in nature—Del Carmen is working towards securing recognition as an ASEAN Heritage Park. This designation will help preserve the region’s rich biodiversity while promoting eco-tourism and sustainable practices.
To address plastic waste effectively, LGU Del Carmen is exploring thermal decomposition technology as a potential solution. This method converts non-recyclable plastics into energy, reducing landfill dependency and mitigating environmental harm.
A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model is being developed for Del Carmen’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), incorporating a store-type display to promote a circular economy. This approach encourages waste segregation, recycling, and community engagement in sustainable consumption.
Through this program, LGU Del Carmen aims to align with global sustainability goals, foster long-term ecological resilience, and create a replicable model for other municipalities.
We thank WWF for its commitment to a plastic-free future and look forward to continued collaboration in building a greener, cleaner Del Carmen.
