SIAM Postdoctoral Support Program
SIAM Establishes Postdoctoral Support Fund
We are delighted to announce that the SIAM Career Opportunities Committee is organizing a Virtual Resume Workshop, and we invite you to participate.
The resume-building workshop will provide one-on-one mentoring that focuses on resumes, CVs, and cover letters. Anyone who wishes to receive mentoring can sign up for a time slot to be paired with a mentor who will review and comment on their application materials during the workshop. Assigned mentors will have firsthand experience in the mentee’s target field of work: academia, government, industry, or non-profit.
The resume workshop will be held from 10 am until 4 pm ET on October 3, 2024. Resources and up-to-date information will be available on the workshop website.
If you are interested in participating, please complete this questionnaire that will help us make effective mentoring matches. To give us sufficient time to match mentees with appropriate mentors, we ask that you complete the questionnaire by Friday, September 6.
If you have any questions, please contact programs@siam.org.
The second Joint Alabama-Florida Conference on Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems and Applications was held on May 18-19, 2024, at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. With support from the SIAM Chapter at GSU and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, 7 GSU graduate students attended this prestigious regional conference. The SIAM Chapter at GSU supported 6 students who presented their research at the Poster session.
All students attended various special sessions, plenary talks, networking, and social events. The conference mainly focused on the applications of differential equations and dynamic systems. Our students could attend sessions related to their research and in other areas to expand and enrich their exposure to mathematics.
As all students noted afterward, they were also able to form new connections with peer students and faculty from other institutions. These new connections may lead to future collaborations, thus expanding the status and reach of GSU and its students on the regional and national mathematics research scene.
Dear SIAM Student Chapter Leaders,
SIAM has exciting opportunities for students coming up this summer. Applications for the two programs listed below are open now. Please feel free to share the information below and the attached flyer with anyone in your SIAM Student Chapter or program who may be interested!
If you have questions about any of these programs, reach out to programs@siam.org.
Sincerely,
The SIAM Programs Team
Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp and Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop: Application due April 19
We are pleased to announce the 19th Annual Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp (GSMMC). The GSMMC will take place June 20-23, 2024 at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, United States.
The GSMMC is a workshop designed to teach graduate students a broad range of problem-solving skills, including mathematical modeling and analysis, scientific computation, and critical assessment of solutions. Guided by an invited faculty mentor, students work in teams on highly interdisciplinary problems inspired by real industrial applications. As a result, the GSMMC provides a valuable educational and career-enhancing experience outside of the traditional academic setting. Advanced undergraduate students may also apply to participate.
The GSMMC is run in conjunction with the Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop the following week, held this year at the University of Vermont. The MPI Workshop focuses on real-world open-ended industrial problems and invites problem-solvers at all career stages, from students to professors. The skills obtained at the GSMMC allow participants to become valuable contributors to the problem-solving teams at the MPI Workshop. This event also provides mentoring and networking opportunities with academic and industrial representatives. GSMMC participants will automatically be registered for the MPI Workshop. Learn more about both the GSMMC and the MPI Workshop.
Applications must be completed by April 19, 2024 for full consideration, and successful applicants will be notified by early to mid-May.
Full financial support is available for all participants. The selection will be based on academic background and interests as indicated in the application form and on a letter of recommendation from a faculty sponsor. Women and students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
Undergraduate Research Presentations (in-person or online)
If you’ve participated in a summer research program or done some mentored research with a faculty member any time of the year, please consider presenting your work at the 2024 SIAM Annual Meeting. This is a great opportunity to expand your professional network, get experience presenting your work, and learn about research going on in other fields.
There are two options for participating in AN24:
In person July 8—12 in Spokane, Washington
Virtually July 18--20

The Art of Problem Solving Series
The AMS Graduate Chapter at GSU, with support from the Math & Stat Club at GSU and the SIAM Student Chapter at GSU, have organized a series of sessions under the title of "The Art of Problem Solving" for those students who are interested in increasing their knowledge and wish to expose themselves to some higher level problems in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and other areas of mathematics. During these sessions, you can learn how to use basic yet non-trivial ideas to solve somewhat unusual problems — which will feel usual and standard to you after you learn some tricks! If you are interested, you are very welcome to attend. This fourth session is going to take place every Thursday, from 16:45 to 17:45, in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Seminar Room 1441 (25 Park Place, 14th floor). See you there! For more info and to RSVP, see the event on PIN at [/event/9924006]https://pin.gsu.edu/event/9924006 (GSU login required). And by the way, for the first time since we've started this series, food in the form of pizza will be provided! --- Dr. Grinshpon (mgrinshpon@gsu.edu)
