If you want rugged durability and a classic wired experience for a child who needs consistent sound, choose Shure SRH240A; if you need wider frequency response and plush comfort for extended listening sessions, choose SAMSON SR970.
These two over-ear models represent different philosophies in audio engineering. The Shure SRH240A is built like a tank with a focus on isolation and longevity, while the SAMSON SR970 prioritizes a broader sonic spectrum and soft velour materials for all-day wear. For parents specifically looking for bone conduction headphones for children or similar durable audio gear that can withstand daily roughhousing, neither of these specific wired models offers bone conduction technology, but they both serve as excellent, high-fidelity alternatives that avoid the safety concerns of open-ear designs. When weighing the trade-offs, the Shure wins on build resilience, whereas the SAMSON takes the lead on driver size and material softness.
• Shure SRH240A: Built with stainless steel components and a closed-back design for maximum isolation; best for active kids who need a headphone that won't break under pressure.
• SAMSON SR970: Features large 50mm drivers and plush velour ear cups for superior comfort; best for a child who will wear headphones for long study or gaming sessions without shifting.
• The Verdict: Choose the Shure if you prioritize a "set it and forget it" build quality that handles drops and tugs better, but pick the SAMSON if your child values soft touch and a wider range of sound reproduction.
The Shure SRH240A is designed for those who value reliability above all else. With its history of audio innovation dating back to 1925, this model carries a reputation for withstanding the rigors of everyday use. The construction features a sturdy enclosure and a headband designed to be ergonomic, ensuring the unit stays secure even during movement. The closed-back, circumaural design is particularly effective here, resting comfortably over the ears while significantly reducing background noise. This passive noise cancellation is a critical feature for voice assistant sports earbuds for children users who might otherwise struggle to hear instructions or music in noisy environments, though these are wired headphones rather than true wireless earbuds.

What truly sets the SRH240A apart is its acoustic tuning and physical robustness. The 40 mm neodymium dynamic drivers are optimized to reproduce deep bass alongside clear mids and highs, making them suitable for general listening and monitoring. The impedance is calibrated at 38 ohms, meaning they connect easily to most consumer and professional audio devices without requiring a separate amplifier. For a child, the replaceable ear pads are a massive advantage. If the cushions wear out from heavy use, they can be swapped out rather than discarding the entire pair, extending the product life significantly. The cable is a straight, attached oxygen-free copper wire that measures 6.56 feet (2 meters), providing enough length for a child to move around a room without being tethered too tightly.
This model is ideal for parents who want a "buy it once" solution. The packaging includes a gold-plated 6.35 mm (1/4") threaded adapter, ensuring compatibility with various equipment. However, the 16-ounce weight might feel slightly heavier than some competitors, and the non-detachable cable means you must handle the connection point with care. It is also important to note that the age range description lists this as an Adult product, so supervision is required when fitting it on younger children to ensure the clamping force is appropriate. If you are looking for best extra bass true wireless earbuds for children, you will not find them here, as this is a wired, over-ear solution. But for a wired option that promises legendary quality and a 2-year warranty, the SRH240A stands as a fortress of audio performance.
The SAMSON SR970 Professional Studio Reference Headphones take a different approach, focusing heavily on the listening experience through material choice and driver size. These headphones feature large 50mm premium drivers, which offer an exceptionally clear, full-range frequency response spanning from 10 Hz to 25,000 Hz. This wide dynamic range allows every note to be reproduced accurately, making them a favorite for studio applications like mixing and playing back audio. For a child using headphones for educational purposes or immersive storytelling, this extended frequency range ensures that subtle details in music or narration are not lost.
Comfort is the primary selling point of the SR970. The ear cups are lined with plush velour, a material chosen specifically for long-term listening sessions. Unlike synthetic leather that can get hot and sweaty after an hour, velour breathes better and feels softer against the skin. The self-adjusting headband provides a secure fit without excessive clamping force, which is crucial for growing heads. The impedance sits at 32 ohms, making these very efficient and well-suited for mobile device power, meaning they will work perfectly with tablets and phones without needing external amplification. The closed-back design provides sound isolation, keeping the music in and outside noise out, which helps a child focus on their task.
However, the SR970 is a limited edition model, which could mean availability varies over time. The enclosure is made of plastic, which makes the unit lighter than the Shure but potentially less resistant to crushing forces. The package includes a 1/4" adapter and comes with a limited 1-year warranty. While the frequency response is technically superior on paper, the real-world benefit depends on whether your child is sensitive to high-frequency sounds or prefers a warmer, bass-heavy tone. This model fits the user who prioritizes acoustic purity and soft materials over industrial-grade durability.
• Best for battery-free reliability → Shure SRH240A: Both are wired, but the Shure's 2-meter cable and 2-year warranty suggest a longer intended lifespan for heavy use.
• Best for extended comfort → SAMSON SR970: The plush velour ear cups are objectively softer and more breathable than standard padding for long listening periods.
• Best for low-impedance mobile devices → SAMSON SR970: At 32 ohms, these require less power to drive than the Shure's 38 ohms, making them slightly easier to push with smaller phone amps.
• Best for durability and drop resistance → Shure SRH240A: The stainless steel components and robust construction make it the safer bet for clumsy handling.
• Best for wide frequency detail → SAMSON SR970: The 10 Hz - 25,000 Hz range covers more ground than the Shure's 20 Hz - 20,000 Hz, capturing more extreme lows and highs.
• Best for repairability → Shure SRH240A: Replaceable ear pads allow you to fix worn-out cushions without buying a new pair.
• Best for studio-style accuracy → SAMSON SR970: Marketed explicitly as professional studio reference headphones, these are tuned for precise monitoring.
• Best for general home recording → Shure SRH240A: Designed for general listening and monitoring with a balanced sound profile that suits various genres.
In my opinion, I would buy the Shure SRH240A for a child. While the SAMSON SR970 offers a slightly wider frequency range and softer velour cups, the Shure's construction quality is simply more aligned with the unpredictable nature of kids' electronics. The stainless steel build, the 2-year warranty, and the ability to replace worn ear pads make it a smarter long-term investment. For bone conduction headphones for children, parents often look for safety, but for traditional audio, having a pair that survives the inevitable drop and tug-of-war is paramount. The Shure delivers that peace of mind while still providing excellent sound with its 40mm neodymium drivers. If your child has sensitive ears and needs the absolute softest touch, the SAMSON is a worthy runner-up, but for overall value and toughness, the Shure takes the crown.
Both models are over-ear designs that provide good isolation, but the SAMSON SR970 uses plush velour which is generally softer and less likely to cause heat buildup than standard padding. However, parents should always supervise the fit to ensure the clamping force isn't too tight.
Yes, both the Shure SRH240A and SAMSON SR970 come with a 3.5 mm jack and include a gold-plated 1/4" adapter. Their low impedances (38 ohms and 32 ohms respectively) mean they work efficiently with the power outputs of most modern mobile devices.
The Shure SRH240A is noted for reproducing deep bass with clear mids and highs, while the SAMSON SR970 uses larger 50mm drivers for a full-range response. The Shure is often preferred for a punchier, more defined low-end in casual listening.
Absolutely. The Shure SRH240A is specifically designed with replaceable ear pads to ensure long product life. The SAMSON SR970 documentation highlights the velour material but does not explicitly mention a replacement kit, so check the manufacturer's support page for specific parts availability.
