Dual and Concurrent Enrollment

Scituate is committed to supporting students in taking college courses to earn credit while still in secondary school. In 2013, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed legislation (RIGL 16-100) that called for the adoption of a statewide policy for dual enrollment that allows students to take college courses to earn credit at both the secondary school and the higher education institution. Subsequently, the Board of Education adopted regulations in April of 2015, that provide all qualified Rhode Island high school students access to college level coursework while still in high school.Students can access college level courses in two ways by taking: Concurrent enrollment courses at their high school: these courses are the same courses that are taught at the college, but are approved to be taught at the high school, by the high school teacher. (Advanced Placement, Early Enrollment, and Project Lead the Way Courses) All exam fees are waived through RIDEDual enrollment courses at the institution’s campus: these courses are part of the institution’s regular schedule and are taught by a college professor. Dual enrollment means you receive the approval of your school counselor and principal to take a college class that is taught by the professor on the college campus. Make sure you verify that the course you want to take will also count toward your graduation requirements. Families will be responsible for the student’s own transportation to the dual enrollment class. Students will not be allowed to take dual enrollment courses that are offered in the Scituate High School Program of Studies. Completed coursework from other institutions will be be added to Scituate High School transcripts at the student/parent request, and will not be included in the calculation of GPA and class rank. Upon successful completion of a dual or concurrent course, students will earn credit toward their high school graduation requirements and they will earn credit with the higher education institution where they are enrolled for the course. Depending on their plans after high school, students can choose to transfer the credit with another institution. Ultimately, all students have the opportunity to reduce the amount of time and expense required to obtain a college degree.

Advanced Coursework Network

Rhode Island public secondary schools now have the opportunity to expand the advanced level coursework available to their high school and middle school students through a new initiative, the Advanced Coursework Network.

Enriching experiences with advanced coursework help students get a head start on post-secondary success, master the skills required of a lifelong learner, and be prepared for jobs in sectors critical to Rhode Island’s future prosperity. The Advanced Coursework Network is designed to help districts and schools meet this need by creating opportunities for Rhode Island students to envision, pursue and realize their individualized graduation pathway.   Questions?
