Shree Mallinath Devasthan is situated in Marcel, the temple village of Goa.
History
Shree Mallinath Devasthan in Goa has a rich cultural heritage. The idol of Shree Mallinath was initially shifted to Mayem village in Bicholim taluka (across river Mandovi) due to conversions on Chudamani island or Chodan. It had to be soon shifted to yet another safer place across the river Mandovi, that is, in the kingdom of Raja Soundekar when the Christian missionaries landed in Bicholim. That is how the temple of Shree Mallinath came to be here in Marcel. At that time, it was one of the most admired temples in the region, in terms of architecture.
The exact year when the temple in Marcel was built is not known, however it is believed to be > 200 years old. Thereafter, in around the year 1950 the temple underwent renovation along with construction of the new Agarshala. It was then followed by construction of the Sabha Mantap of the temple and Pran Pratishtapana of the new idol of Shree Mallinath in the 1960s.
