Tu by Patricia Grace - Novel Study Y11/Y12
Download this comprehensive workbook full of chapter questions, extension questions, projects and essay preparation scaffolds for your students. I recommend starting your year with the short story 'Yellow Brick Road' by Witi Ihimaera as it is a fantastic companion text to establish the historical context in New Zealand before moving on to the time period of the novel. 'Yellow Brick Road' will allow students to discuss the challenges of Māori urban migration. Students that need additional support have the option of remaining on this text, rather than moving to the novel study. The short texts are available on different online platforms.
I originally made these resources as my outlet for getting my head around the pilot NCEA Level One standards. I wanted to have something ready to go for them, and had been given a class set of these novels. However, things have rapidly moved on from that time, with many iterations of both the NCEA qualification and the curriculum itself. To use these freebies, you would need to delete the 'pilot' standards and reshape the assessment statements to whichever version we are given by the government.
As the short stories are already readily available online, I think it is fairly safe to upload my unit workbook below, complete with the stories.
