Toss of coin determines first break. Alternate break thereafter. Breaker will rack and pay with exception of the third game if needed then quarters will be split.
Tournament director's decision shall be final on any disputes or questions on tournament rules.
All shots should be called ball and pocket. Jump shots are not allowed.
If judgement questions should arise during a game, the opponent should ask a neutral party for a call before the shot is taken. Avoid post-shot arguments.
Rack: The 8-ball must be in the center of the rack with a stripe and a solid in the opposite back corners.
Break:
The breaker shall position the cue ball fully behind the head string.
A miscue, stopping or deflecting the cue ball prior to hitting the racked balls is considered a foul and results in loss of turn.
At least 3 balls must strike a rail for the break to be legal.
Failure to drive three balls to the rails results in a re-rack and loss of turn.
An 8-ball break is not a win. If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break along with the cue ball, the opponent may choose a re-rack or to have the 8-ball spotted. A 8-ball break without a scratch is the option of the breaker for a re-rack or spotting of the 8-ball.
Open Break:
The choice of stripes or solids is not determined on the break even if balls from one or both groups are made.
The choice of groups is determined only when a player pockets an object ball after the break.
Once choice of groups is established, the cue ball must strike an object ball from the established group prior to striking any other ball.
The 8-ball is neutral on an open table only. After a player has legally determined their group of balls, the 8-ball is no longer neutral.
The accidental touching or moving of an object ball by the player's cue stick, body, or clothing is not a foul. If an object ball is moved, it should be replaced as closely as possible to the original position by the opponent. Replacement should not be made by the player that caused the movement.
Ball in hand fouls: Scratching of the cue ball or a "no hit" will result in the opponent being able to place the cue ball anywhere on the table (not just behind the head string). Exception: Scratches or fouls on the break result in the cue ball being placed behind the head string. No safety play allowed.
Scratching on an attempt at the 8-ball is not a loss of game, unless the 8-ball is pocketed along with the cue ball.
Fouls shall be called by the opponent or neutral judge only.
Common sense, fair play, courtesy, and sportsmanship are the guidelines that must govern play.
