If you want premium sound fidelity, a longer battery life for all-day sessions, and a sleek design that prioritizes comfort during intense land-based workouts, choose shokz OpenRun Pro; if you need the ability to swim with your music, internal storage for phone-free listening, and the most advanced connectivity protocol available today, choose VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones.
These two devices represent the current peak of open-ear audio technology, yet they solve completely different problems. The shokz OpenRun Pro is the refined choice for runners, cyclists, and gym-goers who demand top-tier audio clarity without sacrificing situational awareness. In contrast, the VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones are the rugged utility player, engineered specifically for swimmers and those who refuse to be tethered to their smartphones by cables or streaming dependencies.
• shokz OpenRun Pro: Delivers the best-in-class bone conduction audio with 10 hours of battery life and a titanium frame built for stability, but lacks internal storage and waterproofing for submersion.
• VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones: Offers unique hybrid audio drivers, IPX8 waterproofing for swimming, and 32GB of built-in MP3 storage, though it provides slightly less battery life than its competitor.
• Best for: The shokz OpenRun Pro is ideal for athletes focused on land performance and high-fidelity audio, while the VLOP is the superior pick for water sports enthusiasts and travelers who want offline music access.
The shokz OpenRun Pro is designed for the person who treats their workout as a serious session where audio quality matters just as much as safety. This device utilizes the brand's 9th generation bone conduction technology paired with TurboPitch engineering to deliver what they describe as a rich bass response and powerful volume. Unlike many competitors that struggle with muddy mids, this model focuses on clarity, ensuring that podcasts and music sound crisp directly through your cheekbones. If you are looking for the best ear clip headphones for ps5 or any gaming setup where you need to hear your game audio clearly while staying aware of your roommates or surroundings, this design excels.
Its physical construction is equally purposeful. The wraparound frame is made of lightweight titanium, which keeps the total weight down to just 29 grams. This isn't just about feeling light; it is about stability. The design ensures the headphones stay put during intense training, whether you are sprinting, doing burpees, or riding a bike. The open-ear fit means you avoid the pressure points and sweat buildup common with in-ear buds, making it comfortable for extended wear. With a battery life of 10 continuous hours, you can cover long runs or multi-hour work sessions without needing to plug in. Even better, a quick 5-minute charge gives you 1.5 hours of use, which is perfect for catching up on content before heading out the door.

However, there are trade-offs to consider. While it features Bluetooth 4.0, which is reliable for standard connections, it does not offer the latest connectivity standards found in newer budget models. More importantly, it has no internal storage. You must carry your phone or another source device to play music. It also lacks the deep waterproofing required for swimming; while it handles sweat and rain well, submerging it would likely damage the electronics. This makes it a fantastic choice for runners, gym rats, and casual listeners, but it is not the right tool for someone who wants to take their music into the pool.
The VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones are built for a specific, demanding niche: people who want to disconnect from their phones entirely or immerse themselves in water. The standout feature here is the dual-driver system, combining bone conduction vibration with directional air conduction. This hybrid approach aims to provide clearer mids and enhanced bass compared to traditional single-mode bone conduction units. If you have ever felt that bone conduction headphones sound "thin" or lack depth, this technology attempts to bridge that gap by adding an air conduction element to the mix.
What truly sets this device apart is its versatility in aquatic environments. Rated equivalent to IP68/IPX8 waterproof standards, it is engineered to survive full submersion. This makes it a genuine solution for swimming headphones, allowing you to listen to music underwater where Bluetooth signals cannot reach. To facilitate this, it includes 32GB of internal storage capable of holding thousands of songs. You can load up your favorite playlists via USB and leave your phone on the pool deck. The device supports standalone playback in MP3, FLAC, WMA, WAV, and APE formats, giving you flexibility in file types. The magnetic charging system allows for quick recharging, though users should note that the internal MP3 mode consumes more power than Bluetooth mode, affecting the total runtime.
For land-based activities, the VLOP switches seamlessly to Bluetooth 6.0, offering a stable connection range of up to 10 meters. This is a significant upgrade over older protocols, promising smoother transitions and fewer dropouts during movement. The ergonomic design features a titanium memory frame that adapts to various head shapes, ensuring a secure fit even when wearing goggles, helmets, or glasses. At 26 grams, it is lighter than the shokz, which might appeal to those sensitive to neck strain. However, the battery life caps at 8 hours, which is decent but falls short of the shokz's endurance. Additionally, the controls rely on push buttons rather than remote touch interfaces, which some users may find less intuitive for quick adjustments during a run.
• Best for battery life → shokz OpenRun Pro: With 10 hours of continuous play versus 8 hours on the VLOP, the shokz wins for marathon training or all-day events.
• Best for swimming → VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones: Only the VLOP offers true IPX8 waterproofing and internal storage for underwater use; the shokz is not suitable for pools.
• Best for audio clarity on land → shokz OpenRun Pro: The dedicated 9th-gen bone conduction tech and TurboPitch focus on premium sound quality without the complexity of hybrid drivers.
• Best for offline listening → VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones: The 32GB internal storage lets you go phone-free, a critical feature for runners who hate carrying devices.
• Best connectivity speed → VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones: Bluetooth 6.0 offers a modern, robust connection compared to the Bluetooth 4.0 found on the shokz.
• Best value for versatility → VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones: The ability to switch between land and water modes adds functional value that the shokz simply cannot match.
• Best for comfort during long wear → Both are excellent: The shokz weighs 29g and the VLOP 26g; both use titanium frames, so comfort will depend more on individual head shape than weight differences.
• Best for quick charging needs → shokz OpenRun Pro: The 5-minute quick charge providing 1.5 hours of use is a standout feature for busy schedules.
In my opinion, the decision comes down to your primary environment. If your life is mostly spent running, cycling, or working out in a gym, I recommend the shokz OpenRun Pro. Its superior battery life and refined audio tuning make it the most satisfying experience for daily land-based activities. However, if you are a triathlete, a swimmer, or someone who refuses to carry a phone on every jog, the VLOP Bone Conduction Headphones are the only logical choice due to their internal storage and waterproof capabilities.
Both products are excellent examples of how far open-ear technology has come. For a gamer using ear clip headphones for ps5, either could work depending on whether you prioritize the slight edge in sound fidelity (shokz) or the freedom of wireless connectivity without lag concerns (VLOP). Ultimately, I would buy the shokz for my daily commute and gym routine, but I would keep the VLOP strictly for my weekend pool sessions. If you are looking for the best volume limiting neckband headphones for ps5, the open-ear design of both helps maintain hearing health, but the shokz offers a more polished audio profile for entertainment purposes. Check the current price on Amazon to see which fits your budget, but let your usage habits drive the final decision.

No, the shokz OpenRun Pro is not rated for submersion. It handles sweat and rain well, but you should use the VLOP model for swimming because it has IPX8 waterproofing and internal storage for underwater playback.
Not necessarily. The VLOP has 32GB of internal storage, allowing you to load music files directly onto the device. This enables phone-free listening, which is essential for swimming or running without carrying a device.
The shokz OpenRun Pro offers 10 hours of battery life, whereas the VLOP provides 8 hours. If you plan on ultra-long training sessions where recharging isn't an option, the shokz is the better choice.
