History of SHMCEES, LLC and Technology Transfer from Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory (managed by UT-Battelle, LLC)
SHMCEES, LLC is a technology services firm offering the next generation Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) solution leveraging AI to the civil infrastructure industry. This solution incorporates patented technology developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and exclusively licensed to SHMCEES, LLC that not only monitors a structure’s health in real-time, but continuously forewarns of structural failure, thus minimizing the costs and risks associated with failing infrastructure.
Tested and validated by the DOE, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the US Army, and federally funded state bridges, SHMCEES, LLC is positioned to launch NuPredict™ in the $100B SHM market in 2024.
The Challenge: Increased awareness of the economic and social effects of aging, deterioration and extreme events on critical infrastructure has driven the need for advanced SHM and damage detection tools via leveraging AI. As an example, aging bridges, dams, and levees, and the shortage of funds needed to repair or replace them, are urgent concerns for the government. Moreover, in the oil and gas industry, pipelines are essential components of the energy supply chain. Any failure of any of these complex structural systems will cause a significant impact to the environment and economy. In response to this challenge, several SHM techniques have been commercialized within the last 10 years. When damage is substantial, these methods have success in determining where damage has occurred. However, at emerging stages of damage, these existing methods are not successful in failure prediction.
SHMCEES, LLC Solution:
NuPredict™ is an algorithmic solution leveraging AI that provides critical damage detection and failure forewarning reducing the risk of failure in complex structures
NuPredict™ can be applied to various civil infrastructure systems, including complex structures related to electric power, oil & gas, water & waste water, communications, transportation, and buildings
$7M of R&D has been invested into NuPredict™ by DOE, DOD, & FHWA
Testing
NuPredict™ has been tested on a variety of applications by DOE, US Air Force, US Army, FHWA and data has been processed from bridges in an international, national and state settings.
Achieved a 20-for-20 success rate in forewarning failure
How it works
NuPredict™ captures raw data via commercial sensors, such as triaxial accelerometers
This data is initially analyzed on-board the structure by our patented algorithm, housed on a data processor, to determine local flaws and complex system failures
If significant anomaly and/or failure is detected, forewarning alerts are sent via text or email to the bridge monitor
Additionally, the data is retained for further analysis via AI and addresses forensic concerns.
