Trade-off in offspring number and quality in a wild primate species

Energy is a limited resource, and life-history theory proposes that investment in one life process reduces the energy available for others. Producing many offspring, for example, may come at the cost of their quality or survival. In this project, we examined the presence of a quantity-quality trade-off and explored its underlying mechanisms in a long-lived primate species living in a highly seasonal environment. Our findings are based on long-term field data collected over two decades.

Reproductive success and survival are key components of fitness in long-lived species. Variation in these factors can be due to a multitude of factors, including intrinsic characteristics like age, reproductive history, as well as external factors like social and ecological conditions. In this project, I investigated how social and ecological factors, both independently and their interaction, influence reproductive outcomes and survival in wild Assamese macaques. Using long-term data from 71 adult females monitored between 2013 and 2023, I examined predictors of (i) annual conception, (ii) infant survival, and (iii) annual female survival. My models specifically tested the effects of social bond strength, social integration, dominance rank, and fruit availability.

Group-living species interact and to avoid extensive conflicts, arrange themselves in a hierarchical system where dominant individuals outcompete other group members. In this project, we determined the effect of dominance rank on female reproductive success in mammals and the factors that mediate this relationship.

Metacognition allows individual to access their thoughts and understanding. Better metacognitive judgements help individuals to have more certainty about their decisions as well as other's decision. Using behavioral and computational experiments, I tried to find if this could potentially give rise to higher cooperation in human society.

With a population of more than 35 million Stray dogs in India, it can be found on every street. I looked at their behavior to find out how much time they spend in various activities like eating, sleeping, flicking their tail, looking around etc. This project investigated the time-activity budget of street dogs using scan sampling and all occurrences.

Post-error slowing in human children
People slow down after making an error. This comes at the cost of speed response where people want to have the next response correct even though they respond slower. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children have diminished PES, so this could be used as a potential behavioral indicator to distinguish healthy and ADHD patients.
