The Subtle Nature of Acupuncture: Reflections from Clinical Practice
by Shirly Liu
Acupuncture is a fascinating and complex system that is still not fully understood. While modern research continues to explore how it works, it has been practiced for thousands of years and remains widely used in clinical care today.
Over more than twenty years of practice, I have come to see that acupuncture is not simply about treating where the pain appears. More often, it is about helping the body regain a sense of balance. The body’s structure, internal functions, and emotional state are constantly influencing one another. When something is out of balance, it may show up in a different area of the body.
This is why treatment does not always focus only on the site of discomfort. For example, shoulder pain may be addressed through points on the limbs, and tension in the neck may sometimes involve areas such as the abdomen. In this way, the body can be understood as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated parts.
Each treatment is based on a clinical assessment of the individual’s current condition. While grounded in established theory, it is also shaped by experience and careful observation over time. As I continue to practice, I place increasing emphasis on understanding patterns within the whole body, rather than focusing on a single symptom.
I also value the quality of interaction during treatment. When patients feel at ease and supported, it often creates the right conditions for the body to respond and adjust.
To me, acupuncture is not about opposing symptoms, but about supporting the body as it moves toward a more balanced and comfortable state.
