I woke up the other morning, grabbed my coffee, and did what many of us do before we're fully awake ... checked social media.
Except something was wrong.
Facebook was down. Instagram was not working...whaaaattttt🥺
At first, I wasn't too concerned. Outages happen. A little while later, Facebook came back online and everything seemed fine.
But Instagram? My primary social media account? It was gone. I had a moment of panic but then remembered that I CAN access insta via facebook if I have to. Still my fav app wasn't available to me...what's a girl to do. Where will I post my 5 o'clock cocktail.
GONE for a full 24 hours.
No posting. No stories. No messages. No connecting with my community. Nothing.
In the past week I have had a couple of client calls over missing socials. Blocked accounts. Deleted accounts. YIKES...what is happening.
Like many of us, I circle the social media realm but by no means do I consider myself an expert. I can usually McIver my way out of tricky situations but some of these complaints are big!! Even McIver would be shaking his head!
My app not functioning at all was a great reminder of something every business owner, coach, entrepreneur, and content creator needs to remember:
🔊Social media is rented ground. Your email list is property you own.
We spend hours creating content, building followers, engaging with our audience, and growing our presence online. But at the end of the day, we don't control those platforms.
💡Algorithms change.
💡Accounts get hacked.
💡Platforms experience outages.
💡Rules shift overnight.
And sometimes, your audience can disappear with the click of a button, or in my case, for an entire day.
🔊Your email list is different.
When someone joins your email list, you have a direct connection with them. No algorithm decides whether they see your message. No platform outage prevents you from reaching them. It's one of the most valuable assets you can build for your business.
If you don't already have a strategy for growing your email list, now is the perfect time to start.
3 Quick Tips to Build Your Email List
Offer something valuable: Create a simple freebie your audience would love, a checklist, guide, worksheet, resource list, or mini training.
Talk about it regularly: Don't assume people know they can join your list. Mention it in your posts, stories, videos, and conversations.
Make signing up easy: Include your signup link everywhere...your social media profiles, website, email signature, and blog posts.
The Instagram outage was inconvenient, but it was also a valuable reminder. Social media is an amazing tool for building relationships and growing your business. Just don't build your entire business on land you don't own.
Because one day you might wake up, reach for your coffee, open your favorite app... and discover it's gone.
