Shinkendo Shimbukan

Singapore

Welcome to the official Shinkendo Shimbukan Singapore Home Page. We are an organization dedicated to teaching authentic Japanese swordsmanship, under the guidance and leadership of Obata Toshishiro.

Vision

To foster continuous improvement in both technical skill and positive spirit/attitude through the study of Shinkendo. Guided by Jinsei Shinkendo - "Life is Shinkendo, Shinkendo is Life", we make a conscious effort to become the best version of ourselves and at the same time help others along the way; to focus not just on personal growth but to also nurture a future generation of practitioners regardless of gender, race or religion.

Shinkendo Means:

"Shin (True) - Ken (Sword) - Do (Way)" is a system of Japanese Swordsmanship which incorporates all aspects of traditional sword study:

- Suburi (Sword Swings and Body Movement)

- Battoho (Sword Draws and Sheathing)

- Tanrengata (Solo Forms (Kata) / Movement Mechanics)

- Tachiuchi (Structured Sparring)

- Tameshigiri (Test Cutting with Live Blade)

Dojo Ethos

  1. The dojo aims to nurture new and existing students, and to see them grow and improve in Shinkendo, and in life.

  2. To achieve this goal, instructors will encourage and instill in students the desire to expand student's comfort zones, so that new techniques and new skills, which are initially challenging, become normal and easy.

  3. As new skills are added, instructors must ensure that current and basic skills be continuously improved too.

  4. This learning philosophy becomes an ongoing process so that all dojo members will improve and progress in Shinkendo and in life,

  5. The dojo will seek to identify and nurture students to also become Shinkendo instructors. This will be the path for dojo leadership renewal, so that the positive values instilled through Shinkendo will continue to flourish and a new generation of students can benefit from Shinkendo, through Shimbukan Dojo.
