17. The Entranceway to the Samādhi that is Taught by Many Buddhas

爾時,婆伽婆在大眾中示教利喜已,即從坐起出王舍城,詣耆闍崛山敷座而坐,諸比丘眾及諸天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽前後圍繞。

At that time, the Bhagavān, having taught the assembly with the benefits of teaching, rose from his seat and left the city of Rājagṛha for Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain, where he spread out his seat and sat down, surrounded by the assembly of bhikṣus and the gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas.

爾時,月光童子、八百億人,并天龍八部、諸鬼、神等,及餘世界十那由他諸菩薩眾,持諸寶鬘、塗香、末香、衣服、幡花、種種音樂、建立幢蓋、懸諸繒幡,出王舍城向耆闍崛山詣如來所,頭面禮足繞無量匝,以已所持花、香、衣服、寶蓋、幢幡、擊諸音樂設大供養。設供養已曲躬恭敬,為問法故却坐一面。

At that time, Candraprabha and his retinue of eight hundred million people, as well as the gods, nāgas, and eight divisions of spirits, and the bodhisattva assembly of ten nayutas from other worlds, brought various offerings such as jewelled garlands, perfumed ointments, powdered incense, clothing, banners, and music, erected canopies and banners, and left the city of Rājagṛha for Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain to visit the Tathāgata. They bowed their heads at his feet, circumambulated him countless times, and offered the flowers, incense, clothing, canopies, banners, and music they had brought. Having made their offerings, they respectfully bowed and withdrew to sit to one side to ask for the Dharma.

爾時,月光童子作如是言:

At that time, Candraprabha spoke thus:

「我於如來、應供、正遍知欲有所問,惟願聽許。」

"I wish to ask the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One something. May you listen and allow me to ask."

爾時,世尊告童子言:

The Bhagavān then told the youth:

「如來、應、正遍知隨汝所欲恣汝問之,汝所問者則能利益無量眾生,吾當為汝分別解說,令汝心喜。」

"The Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One will answer according to your wishes. You may ask as you wish. Your questions will benefit countless beings. I will explain for you and make you happy."

爾時,月光童子既蒙聽許即白佛言:

At that time, having received permission to ask, Candraprabha addressed the Buddha:

「菩薩摩訶薩成就幾法能得如是一切諸法體性平等無戲論三昧?」

"What dharmas should bodhisattva mahāsattvas cultivate to attain the Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation?"

爾時,佛告月光童子言:

At that time, the Buddha told Candraprabha:

「菩薩摩訶薩成就四法能得如是一切諸法體性平等無戲論三昧。

"Bodhisattva mahāsattvas who accomplish four dharmas can attain this Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation.

「何等為四?一者、善學柔軟,同住安隱到調伏地,能忍毀辱,見法除慢,是為初法。菩薩若能成就如是,便能得是一切諸法體性平等無戲論三昧。

What are the four? First, skillfully cultivating softness, peacefully dwelling in tranquillity, reaching the ground of subduing, being able to endure humiliation, seeing the Dharma and eliminating arrogance. This is the first dharma. If bodhisattvas can accomplish this, they will be able to attain this Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation.

「復次,童子!菩薩摩訶薩成就善戒、清淨戒、第一善清淨戒、不濁戒、不缺戒、不穿戒、不雜戒、無定色戒、自在戒、不可呵戒、不退落戒、無所依戒、無所取戒、無所得戒、聖所讚戒、智所讚戒,童子!是為第二。菩薩具足是法,能得一切諸法體性平等無戲論三昧。

"Next, Candraprabha, bodhisattva mahāsattvas accomplish good precepts, pure precepts, foremost good and pure precepts, unclouded precepts, unbroken precepts, unperforated precepts, unadulterated precepts, precepts without fixed form, free precepts, unblamable precepts, non-retrogressive precepts, precepts without reliance, precepts without grasping, precepts without attainment, precepts praised by the sages, precepts praised by the wise. This is the second. Bodhisattvas who fully accomplish these dharmas can attain the Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation.

「復次,童子!菩薩摩訶薩深怖三界起驚畏心、厭離三界起不染心、不著三界起逼惱心、為脫三界苦眾生故起大悲心、趣向阿耨多羅三藐三菩提發大精進心,童子!是為第三。菩薩成就如是,能得一切諸法體性平等無戲論三昧。

"Next, Candraprabha, bodhisattva mahāsattvas deeply fear the three realms, arouse a mind of alarm and fear, detest and abandon the three realms, arouse a mind without defilement, are not attached to the three realms, arouse a mind of oppression, and for the sake of liberating suffering beings in the three realms, arouse a mind of great compassion. This is the third. Bodhisattvas who accomplish this can attain the Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation.

「復次,童子!菩薩摩訶薩求於多聞無有厭足,為重於法不求財利、為重於智不求名聞,隨聞受持、為他廣說、顯示其義,以悲愍故不為親屬,菩薩復作是念:

"Next, Candraprabha, bodhisattva mahāsattvas seek much learning without being satisfied, esteem the Dharma and do not seek material benefits, esteem wisdom and do not seek fame, receive and uphold what they hear, extensively explain it for others, reveal its meaning, and do not do so for the benefit of their relatives, but out of compassion. Bodhisattvas also think like this:

『云何能令前聽法眾生於無上菩提速得不退轉?』

'How can I enable the sentient beings who have heard the Dharma to quickly attain non-retrogression in unsurpassed bodhi?'

是為第四。菩薩成就如是,能得一切諸法平等無戲論三昧。

This is the fourth. Bodhisattvas who accomplish this can attain the Samādhi of the equality of the nature of all dharmas without conceptualisation.

「童子當知:此三昧法門,無量諸佛之所演說、無量諸佛之所讚歎、無量諸佛之所諮嗟、無量諸佛之所顯示、無量諸佛之所修習。」

O Youth! You should know that this Samādhi Dharma gate is expounded by immeasurable buddhas, praised by immeasurable buddhas, praised by immeasurable buddhas, revealed by immeasurable buddhas, and cultivated by immeasurable buddhas."

爾時,世尊而說偈言:

At that time, the Bhagavān spoke these verses:

「我念不思那由劫,

有佛號曰音聲身,

彼音聲身如來尊,

在世壽命六千歲;


"I recall inconceivable eons ago, 

There was a Buddha named Svarāṅgaghoṣa, 

That Svarāṅgaghoṣa Tathagata, 

Lived in the world for six thousand years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

號智自在世所愛,

彼智自在正遍知,

壽命一萬二千歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Named Jñāneśvara, Beloved by the World, 

That Wisdom Sovereign Perfectly Awakened One, 

Lived for twelve thousand years; 


彼佛次前有佛號,

威德自在大勢力,

彼威德佛人中尊,

壽命七萬六千歲;


After that Buddha, there was a Buddha named 

Tejeśvara

That Powerful and Majestic Buddha, honoured among humans, 

Lived for seventy-six thousand years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

號大自在自然智,

彼大自在天人師,

壽命滿足千萬歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Named Matīśvara, of natural wisdom

That Great Sovereign Teacher of Devas and Humans, 

Lived for a full ten million years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

其佛號曰梵聲師,

彼梵聲佛兩足尊,

壽命滿足一億歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Whose name was Bhrahmeśvara, the Teacher, 

That Bhrahmeśvara Buddha, honoured among two-legged beings, 

Lived for a full one billion years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

號眾自在最勝離,

彼眾自在無比尊,

壽命滿足六億歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Named Agnīśvara, Supreme and Free, 

That Agnīśvara, incomparable honored one, 

Lived for sixty million years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

其佛號曰聲自在,

彼音自在婆伽婆,

壽命滿足千萬歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Named Ghoṣeśvara

That Ghoṣeśvara Bhagavān

Lived for a full ten million years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

號曰聲上為世燈,

彼聲上佛世導師,

壽命一萬四千歲;


After that buddha, there was another buddha,

Whose name was Ghoṣānana, the Bhagavān,

That bhagavān's lifespan

Was fourteen thousand years.



彼佛次前復有佛,

號滿月面普名稱,

彼滿月面普名稱,

住世壽命一日夜;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha,

Named Candrānana, of universal renown, 

That Candrānana, of universal renown, 

Lived for one day and one night; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

其佛號曰日面滿,

彼日面佛無比尊,

壽命一萬八千歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Whose name was Sūryānana

That Sūryānana Buddha, incomparable honoured one, 

Lived for eighteen thousand years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

其佛號曰梵面親,

彼梵面親兩足尊,

壽命二萬三千歲;


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Whose name was Brahmānana

That Brahmānana, honoured among two-legged beings, 

Lived for twenty-three thousand years; 


彼佛次前復有佛,

其佛號曰梵婆藪,

彼梵婆藪天人師,

壽命一萬八千歲。


After that Buddha, there was another Buddha, 

Whose name was Brahmaśrava

That Brahmaśrava, teacher of devas and humans, 

Lived for eighteen thousand years.


如是等佛同一劫,

其數二百世導師,

汝聽我今說佛名,

皆是三界世間親:


Thus, in the same eon,
There were two hundred Buddhas, guides of the world,
Listen as I now proclaim those buddhas' names,
All of whom were the kin of the three realms and the world:


無毀身佛、普音佛、

遍威德佛、遍聲佛、

聲供養佛、名聲佛、

聲身勇佛、聲身淨、


Anantaghoṣa Buddha and Vighuṣṭaghoṣa Buddha,
Vighuṣṭatejas Buddha and Vighuṣṭaśabda Buddha,
Svarāvighuṣṭa Buddha and Svarārcita Buddha,
Svarāṅgaśūra Buddha and Svarāṅgaśabda,


智起智知善聰佛、

智光映蔽智等起、

智焰聚佛、智勇佛、

梵上梵命梵善佛、


Jñānābala and Jñānaviśeṣaga Buddha,

Jñānābhibhū and Jñānasamudgata,

Jñānārcimat Buddha and Jñānābhyudgata,

Brahmābala, Brahmavasu, and Subrahma Buddha, 


善梵天佛、勝梵聲、

梵音梵天梵施佛、

威力威主善威佛、

威德自在起威佛、


Brahmādeva Buddha and Brahmaghoṣa,

寂德極寂到定岸、

寂心無上如來尊、

住邊寂佛、善調心、

善調寂根定意佛、


Śāntaśirin, Praśānta, and Śāntīya­pāraṃgata
Śāntiśūra and Sthitottara,
Śānta Buddha and Sudāntacitta,

Sudānta, Śāntendriya, and Śāntamānasa Buddha,


寂上寂德熾盛佛、

度寂彼岸定勇佛、

眾因陀羅王眾佛、

眾自在佛、[*]映蔽眾、


Śāntottara and Śānta­śriya­jvalanta Buddha,

Śānta, Praśānteśvara, and Śāntiśūra Buddha
Gaṇendra Buddha,
Gaṇamukhya Buddha and Gaṇeśvara


眾勝淨智大眾主、

眾主勇健大眾佛、

勝眾解脫正遍知、

見法法幢法起佛、


Gaṇivara, Śuddhajñānin, and Mahāgaṇendra 

Gaṇendraśūra Buddha,
Gaṇivara­pramocaka,
Dharmadhvaja, Dharmaketu, and Dharmottara Buddha,


法體性起法力佛、

法佛妙法勇健佛、

自性法起決定佛。


Dharma­svabhāvodgata and Dharmabala Buddha,
Sudharmaśūra Buddha, and

Svabhāva­dharmottara­niścita Buddha.


如此自性法起佛,

合有八億皆同號,

是佛出於第二劫,

斯等如來我曾供。


Thus, the buddhas of the nature of self-arising,
There were a total of eight billion, all with these names,
These buddhas appeared in the second kalpa,
I have already made offerings to these tathāgatas.


自性法起決定佛,

若有得聞其名者,

聞已受持淨業人,

速能獲得是三昧。


These buddhas were determined by the arising of the the self-existent Dharma;
If there is someone who hears their name,
And after hearing it, they uphold it, they will purify their karma,
And will quickly obtain this Samādhi


我今所說牟尼王,

彼佛次後有餘佛,

不可思議無數劫,

佛號善勝音王佛。


I will now speak of the Muni King
After all of those other buddhas ,
After an inconceivable and innumerable number of kalpas;
That Buddha's name was Narendraghoṣa Buddha.

彼善勝王如來尊,

壽命七萬六千歲。

是如來尊初會時,

有羅漢眾三十億,


That Tathāgata, the Bhagavān,

Had a lifespan of 76,000 years.

When the Tathāgata, the Bhagavān, first held an assembly,

There were 30 koṭis of arhats.


六通、三明、根調伏,

具大威德、四神足,

住最後身諸漏盡,

不為八法之所染。


The six supernormal powers, three insights, and well-tamed faculties,

Great virtue and the four spiritual powers,

Abided in his final body, with all outflows exhausted, and

Not defiled by the eight dharmas.


爾時復有菩薩眾,

其數合有萬萬億,

得六神通、具辯才,

於諸法空學究竟,


At that time there was also a multitude of Bodhisattvas,
Whose number altogether was tens of thousands of myriads of koṭis.
They had attained the six supernormal powers and were endowed with eloquence.
They had completed their study of the emptiness of dharmas. 


以神通力遊億剎,

展轉教化過恒沙,

問諸如來所行道,

還復住於本世界。


By the power of their supernormal powers they travelled to a hundred million lands,
Successively teaching more people than there are sand grains in the Ganges River.
They asked about the path practiced by the Tathāgatas
And then returned to their own worlds. 


博通一切修多羅,

遊於世間作燈明,

是謂,佛子!大神力,

為利眾生遊諸國。


They were widely versed in all the sūtras and
Traveled in the world as lamps.
This is called, O Buddha-children, by their great supernatural power:
Traveling to various lands to benefit sentient beings.


遠離醜穢行梵行,

不為欲故造諸惡,

常為諸天所憙樂,

於諸有中無所依。


They keep away from ugly and filthy things and practice noble conduct.
They do not do evil deeds for the sake of desire.
They are always rejoiced in by the devas.
They have no dependence on any existence.

於空閑處常乞食,

住於空寂行頭陀,

多聞巧言大福德,

能於三界無所著。


They always go on alms rounds for food in empty, secluded places.
They live in seclusion and practise the dhūta practices.
They are learned and skillful in speech and have great merit.
They have no attachment to the three realms. 


樂於禪定無所畏,

於義決定獲辯才,

於辭句義已善學,

佛子一問悉究竟。


They enjoy dhyāna meditation and are fearless.
They have certainty about meanings and have attained eloquence.
They have studied well the meaning of words and phrases.
That buddha’s children have mastered all of that about which they ask questions.


攝護一切諸善業,

於無量劫修行滿,

常為諸佛之所讚,

演說解脫道句義。


They collect all good karmas,
And after practicing for innumerable kalpas,
They will constantly be praised by the Buddhas
And expound the meaning of the words of the path of liberation. 


持戒清淨無穢污,

如花處水無所著,

於三界中常起厭,

不為世法之所染。


They will keep the precepts purely and without defilement,
Like a flower in water that has no attachment.
They will always feel disgust for the three realms
And not be stained by worldly dharmas. 


其心清淨業善淨,

少欲知足具威德,

安住當來聖德中,

亦住三明殊勝道。


Their minds will be pure and their karmas will be pure.
They will have few desires and be content.
They will have awesome virtues and abide in the future noble merits.
They will also abide in the superior path of the three insights.


要在修行非口言,

自安於法為他說,

為諸如來善攝受,

委付一切佛法藏。


The essential point of their practice is to practise without speaking.
One should be secure in the Dharma and teach it to others.
One should be well accepted by the Tathāgatas
And entrust to them the treasury of the Buddha’s Dharma. 


於三界中起怖畏,

以寂靜心常修定,

常為諸佛所加護,

說千億種修多羅。


One should be afraid of the three realms of existence
And always cultivate meditation with a tranquil mind.
One will then always be protected by the Buddhas
And teach a thousand koṭis of sūtras. 


若說億種修多羅,

遠離一切世間教,

信於空寂說深義,

無量名稱德如海。


If one teaches a thousand koṭis of sūtras,
One will be far removed from all worldly teachings
And believe in emptiness and tranquility.
If one teaches their profound meaning,
One’s reputation and virtue will be immeasurable and like an ocean.


童子!我於無量劫,

常讚歎彼無餘間,

我今但說其少分,

猶如大海水一渧。


O Youth! For immeasurable kalpas
I always praised that buddha without interruption.
I now only speak of a little bit about him,
As if it were just a drop of water in the ocean.

彼時善勝音王佛,

說此寂滅最勝定,

是時三千大千界,

諸天及人悉充滿。


At that time, when the Buddha Narendraghoṣa
Taught this supreme Samādhi of quiescence,
The three-thousand great thousandfold world
Was filled with devas and humans. 


彼佛說此寂定時,

爾時大地六種動,

天、人眾數如恒沙,

安住不退菩提道。


When that buddha taught this Samādhi of quiescence,
The great earth shook in six ways.
Devas and humans as numerous as the sands of the Ganges
Abided on the path of non-retrogression from bodhi


有王最上人中尊,

號功德力大威神,

具足有於五百子,

顏貌端正甚壞麗,


There was a king, the most honourable among humans,
Called Śirībala.
He had five hundred sons,
Who were handsome and beautiful. 


有妙夫人數八億,

悉是王宮內眷屬,

彼功德王所生女,

合有一千四百億。


He had eight hundred million beautiful queens,
All of whom were his palace attendants.
The daughters born to King Śirībala
Were altogether fourteen hundred billion.


是王八月十五日,

方欲善受八戒齋,

共於八億那由人,

俱時往詣如來所。


On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the king
Wished to receive the eight precepts and fast.
Together with eight hundred million nayutas of people,
He went to the Tathāgata’s presence 


稽首無上兩足尊,

即於佛前坐一面,

如來知彼心所樂,

即便為說勝三昧。


And bowed to the supreme one among bipeds.
Then he sat down to one side in front of the Buddha.
The Tathāgata knew what he wished for in his mind
And taught this superior Samādhi to him. 


是王聞斯三昧已,

棄捨王位如涕唾,

并捨一切所親愛,

於彼佛所而出家。


After hearing this Samādhi, the king
Abandoned his royal position as if it were spittle.
He also abandoned all his beloved ones
And renounced the world in the Buddha’s presence


夫人、後宮、調順子、

及諸女等皆出家,

後宮眷屬及親眾,

七十六萬那由他。


His wife, the concubines, his son Daṇḍin,
And his daughters all renounced the world. 

The concubines, their retinues, and their relatives
Numbered seven hundred and sixty thousand nayutas. 


彼王、妻、子出家者,

安住勇猛常精進,

經行不住滿八年,

於經行時便命終。


The king, his wife, and his son who renounced the world
Were firm, brave, and always diligent. 

They did not stop their walking meditation for eight years.
When they had finished their walking


此大聖王命終已,

還生本處王宮中,

忽然化生無胎染,

是時如來猶在世。


This greatly noble king, died,

He was reborn in the palace where he originally lived,

Suddenly appearing without the defilement of a womb,

The Tathāgata of that time was still in the world.


其父號曰堅固力、

其母號曰大智慧,

其王生已白父母:


『勝音王佛住世不?


His father was named Dṛḍhabala,

And his mother was named Mahāmatī.

When the prince was born, he asked his parents:


'Is the Buddha Narendraghoṣa still in the world?


時彼勝音王如來,

曾為我說勝三昧,

非是因緣、非無緣,

於諸有中唯說一。


Once, that Narendraghoṣa Tathāgata,

Expounded the supreme Samādhi for me,

Not by means of causes and conditions,

But only once in all existence.


一切諸法體性印,

出千萬億修多羅,

是諸菩薩無上財,

今佛猶說三昧不?


The seal of the essence of all dharmas
Is the production of tens of thousands of myriads of koṭis of sūtras.
This is the unsurpassed wealth of the bodhisattvas;
Now, does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi?


說法不壞於因果,

能修最勝八聖道,

如來智慧見世間,

了知諸法入真諦,


The Buddha teaches the Dharma without destroying the law of cause and effect,
And he is able to cultivate the supreme Noble Eightfold Path.
The Tathāgata’s wisdom sees the world,
And he understands that all dharmas enter the truth,


身業、口業皆清淨、

意業清淨、知見淨,

出過一切諸攀緣,

是佛猶說三昧耶?


His physical and verbal actions are all pure,
And his mental actions are pure. His knowledge and vision are pure,
And he has transcended all clinging;
Does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi?


能知諸陰界平等,

遠離一切諸入相,

證於無生寂滅忍,

是佛猶說三昧耶?


He is able to know the equality of the aggregates and realms,
And he has abandoned the appearances of all faculties

He has realised the patience of the peace of nonarising;

Does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi?


無礙辯才入寂智,

達解文字差別智,

能過一切取著事,

是佛猶說三昧耶?


His unhindered eloquence enters the wisdom of peace,
And he comprehends the wisdom of the difference between words.
He is able to transcend all things to which he is attached;
Does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi?


知諸音聲得欣喜,

見諸佛已起深樂,

得於聖趣柔軟直,

佛猶說是三昧耶?


Knowing the sounds of all languages and being able to rejoice,
Seeing the buddhas and giving rise to deep joy,
Attaining the gentle and straightforward noble path;
Does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi?

不起瞋怒恒調善,

發言美好常含笑,

見諸眾生先語慰,

佛猶說是三昧不?


Not giving rise to anger and always being harmonious and good, 

Speaking pleasantly and always smiling, 

Seeing sentient beings and speaking to them first;

Does the Buddha still teach the Samādhi


恭敬尊長無懈倦,

禮拜供養恒瞻視,

其身清淨具白法,

法王猶說三昧不?


Respectfully honouring the elders without laziness, 

Making offerings and paying homage, always looking up to them, 

Their bodies pure, possessing the white Dharma;

Does the Dharma King still teach the Samādhi


於諸白法常無厭,

住於空閑離邪命,

憶念諸地不忘失,

法王猶說三昧不?


Never being unsatisfied with the white Dharma, 

Abiding in seclusion and avoiding wrong livelihood, 

Remembering all the stages without forgetting;

Does the Dharma King still teach the Samādhi


於陰善巧智神通,

遠離煩惱調伏地,

能斷凡夫語言道,

法王猶說三昧耶?


Having skillful knowledge and supernormal powers in the aggregates, 

Distant from afflictions and subduing the stages, 

Able to cut off the ordinary person's path of speech, 

Does the Dharma King still teach the Samādhi?


常能修進諸勝行,

遠離犯戒知持犯,

及離一切諸親愛,

法王猶說三昧耶?


Always able to cultivate and progress in all excellent practices, 

Distantly leaving transgressions and knowing what to uphold and what to abandon, 

And leaving all intimate affection;

Does the Dharma King still teach the Samādhi?


出過一切諸有生,

自識宿命離諸疑,

其心敬法聞總持,

佛今猶說三昧耶?


Transcending all births in existence, 

Recalling past lives and free from doubts, 

His mind respectfully upholds the Dharma and hear the dhāraṇīs;

Does the Buddha now still teach the Samādhi?


出生深利勝智慧,

信樂不動如山王,

得總持門不退轉,

世親猶說三昧不?


Giving rise to profound and keen superior wisdom, 

Faith and joy unwavering like the king of mountains

Attaining the dhāraṇī gate and not regressing, 

Does the Bhagavān now still teach the Samādhi?


常求一切白淨法,

於惡法中恒遠離,

心不遊入煩惱朋,

如來猶說是法不?


Always seeking all pure dharmas, 

Always distant from evil dharmas, 

His mind does not wander into the faction of afflictions; 

Does the Bhagavān now still teach this Dharma?


諸學究竟得自在,

於諸禪定已窮盡,

智慧能令信欣喜,

說法牟尼猶在不?


Those who have completed their studies attain mastery, 

In all meditations they have exhausted the limit, 

Their wisdom can cause faith and joy, 

Does the Dharma Muni still live?


勝智增長知生智、

無量智慧平等智、

知於諸趣隨生智,

牟尼王說是勝法;


The wisdom of increasing knowledge of superior wisdom, 

The wisdom of immeasurable wisdom and equality, 

The wisdom of knowing to be born in accordance with beings in the various realms:

The supreme Dharma taught by the King of Munis; 


信心出家捨俗地,

不著三界無所依,

制伏其心令欣喜,

是佛說是勝菩提;


Leaving the household life and renouncing the world with faith, 

Not attached to the three realms and without reliance, 

Subduing the mind and causing joy, 

This is the supreme bodhi taught by the Buddha; 


於諸法中無執著,

常能攝受一切法,

於諸業果信不動,

最勝世尊說是法;


Not grasping at any dharmas, 

Always able to uphold all dharmas, Believing in the fruits of karma without wavering, 

This is the supreme Dharma taught by the Bhagavān; 


戒律持犯果報智,

滅於一切諸諍論,

能說非違非諍地,

兩足牟尼說是法;


Knowing the fruits of upholding and violating precepts,
Eliminating all disputes,
Able to speak without contradiction or dispute,
This is the Dharma taught by the Muni among bipeds;

受於忍辱無瞋怒,

於諸問答能善巧,

知諸法句差別智,

大悲世尊說是法;


Enduring patience without anger,
Skillful in answering questions,
Knowing the differences in the meanings of various teachings,
This is the Dharma taught by the Great Compassionate Bhagavān;


知於過去、未來際,

能知三世佛法性,

知於三世分段智,

自然世尊說是法;


Knowing the past and future ranges, 

Able to know the nature of the Buddhas' teachings in the three times, 

Knowing the wisdom of the divisions of the three times, 

Spontaneously, the Bhagavān expounds this Dharma; 


常能係心於一處、

常能安身於聖地,

於諸威儀常不改,

人中牛王說是法;


Always able to focus the mind on one object,
Always able to rest the body on the stage of the noble

In all deportments always unchanging, 

The king of bulls among humans expounds this Dharma; 


有慚有愧自莊嚴,

知於世間應時語,

一切常舒布施手,

無上世親說是法;


Having a sense of shame and conscience, self-adorned, 

Knowing the timely words of the world, 

Always extending the hand of giving, 

The unsurpassed Bhagavān expounds this Dharma; 


常能攝心有慚愧,

亦常厭離惡不善,

隨順頭陀常分衛,

牟尼王尊說勝法;


Always able to control the mind with a sense of shame, 

Also always detesting and leaving behind evil and unwholesomeness, 

Following the dhūta practices and always receiving alms, 

The King of Munis expounds the supreme Dharma; 


常懷慚愧恒欣喜,

於尊供養恒恭敬,

遠離憍慢修禮拜,

如來說是勝妙法;


Always having a sense of shame and always joyful, 

Always respectful in making offerings to the bhagavāns

Far removed from arrogance and practicing bowing, 

The Tathāgata expounds this wondrous and supreme Dharma;


策下劣心令其安,

自能測量智分齊,

遠離無知諸障礙,

如是勝人說是法;


To help those with inferior minds become settled, 

To be able to measure the scope of one's own wisdom, 

To be free from the obstructions of ignorance, 

Such an excellent person speaks this Dharma; 


能入心智語言智,

決定能知諸言辭,

遠離一切無利事,

法王如來說是法;


To be able to enter the wisdom of the mind and the wisdom of language, 

To be able to definitively understand all words, 

To be free from all unbeneficial things, 

The Dharma King Tathāgata speaks this Dharma; 


常得親近善知識,

遠離一切不善者,

常得信佛不放逸,

牟尼說是無上法;


Always being able to be close to good spiritual friends, 

Being free from all unwholesome ones, 

Always having faith in the Buddha and being diligent, 

The Muni speaks this unsurpassed Dharma; 


知世假名但言說,

常厭一切世間苦,

於利得失無憂喜,

牟尼說是最勝法;


Knowing that worldly names are merely verbal expressions, 

Always being weary of all worldly suffering, 

Being without joy or sorrow regarding gain and loss, 

The Muni speaks this supreme Dharma; 


若得恭敬心不高、

不得恭敬心放捨、

得稱實歎心不喜,

是世間師說是法;


If one obtains respect, the mind does not become arrogant, 

If one does not obtain respect, the mind is not lax, 

If one is praised in accordance with reality, the mind is not delighted, 

Thus is the teacher of the world who speaks this Dharma;


常捨一切諸惡道,

不與俗流相交通,

於出家眾亦不參,

自然智者說是法;


Always abandoning all unwholesome realms, 

Not associating with worldly people, 

Also not participating in the assembly of [non-Buddhist] renunciants, 

This Dharma is taught by the one with natural wisdom; 


勇者遠離非行處,

於佛所行常安住,

威儀具足心善調,

如是法母佛所說;


The brave one avoids inappropriate places, 

Always abiding in the Buddha's practices, 

Possessing dignified deportment and a well-tamed mind, 

This Mother of the Dharma is taught by the Buddha; 


常遠一切凡愚法、

亦遠一切污家法,

常護一切諸佛法,

是法大智之所說;


Always avoiding all ordinary foolish dharmas, 

Also avoiding all defiled household dharmas, 

Always protecting all Buddha-dharmas, 

This Dharma is taught by the one with great wisdom; 


少言美妙善相應,

於他人處能軟語,

如法降伏諸怨敵,

大智慧日之教法;


Speaking little and pleasantly, well in accord, 

Being able to speak softly to others, 

Subduing all enemies according to the Dharma, 

This is the teaching of the sun of great wisdom; 


知時節量諸飲食,

慎勿委信凡夫法,

若遇苦緣心不慼,

是為如來善勝教;


Knowing the appropriate amount of food and drink, 

Carefully not relying on the dharmas of ordinary people, 

If encountering suffering, the mind is not depressed, 

This is the excellent teaching of the Tathāgata;


若見貧人令得財、

若見破戒起悲救,

以悲愍心為開曉,

如是勝法如來教;


If they see the poor, they help them obtain wealth,
If they see those with broken precepts, they arouse compassion and save them,
With a compassionate mind, they open up and awaken them,
This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


常以法攝諸眾生,

及捨一切諸財物,

於諸八法無貯畜,

如來大聖所說教;


Always using the Dharma to guide all beings,
And giving up all wealth and possessions,
Without hoarding the eight dharmas,
These are the teachings taught by the great sage Tathāgata; 


讚歎持戒訶破戒,

堅持淨戒不詐偽,

不積資財能棄捨,

此是如來最勝教;


Praising those who uphold the precepts and reproving those with broken precepts,
Steadfastly upholding pure precepts without deceit,
Not accumulating wealth and able to give it up,
This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


深心啟請諸師長,

隨所言說悉能行,

常能親近諸法師,

如是如來最勝教;


Deeply requesting from all teachers, 

Whatever they say, one can practice it all, 

Always able to be close to Dharma teachers, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


心常愛樂恒恭敬,

亦恒安住於正見,

於諸善業能決定,

如是如來最勝教;


The mind always delights in and respects them,
Also always abiding in right views,
In all wholesome activities able to make decisions,
This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata;


造諸善行為上首,

善巧方便棄捨相,

遠離於想及事相,

是為如來無上教;


To cultivate wholesome practices as foremost, 

To skillfully abandon characteristics, 

To distance oneself from thoughts and the characteristics of things, 

This is the unsurpassed teaching of the Tathāgata; 


於修多羅能解知,

實諦句義善修學,

證解脫智常善巧,

是為如來最勝教;


To be able to understand the sūtras, 

To skillfully cultivate the meaning of true words, 

To realize the wisdom of liberation and always be skillful, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


發言出於揩正語,

心境相稱詞決定,

有所宣說無有疑,

是為如來最勝教;


To speak words that are upright and correct, 

The mind and its objects are in accord, the words are determined, 

Whatever is spoken is without doubt, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


常應修習諸法空,

安住戒力無所畏,

遊行一切寂定處,

是為如來最勝教;


Always to cultivate the emptiness of all dharmas, 

To abide in the power of the precepts and be fearless, 

To roam in all places of tranquility and concentration, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


不求親愛及利養,

其心無有諸諂曲,

遠離一切諸惡見,

是為如來最勝教;


Not seeking for affection or gain, 

The mind without any deceit, 

Distant from all evil views, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata;


於陀羅尼得勝辯,

智慧照明廣無邊,

說法不斷辯才淨,

是為如來最勝教;


Attaining eloquence in dhāraṇī, 

Wisdom illuminating and boundless, 

Continuously expounding the Dharma with pure eloquence, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


於四法門久修習,

能入於行最賢善,

於此佛教奉修行,

是為如來最勝教;


Long cultivating the four gateways to liberation, 

Entering the most virtuous practices, 

Practising and upholding the Buddha's teachings, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


於佛所說隨順忍,

安住彼忍離諸過,

遠離非智住於智,

是為如來最勝教;


Following the Buddha's teachings with acceptance, 

Abiding in acceptance and free from faults, 

Abandoning ignorance and dwelling in wisdom, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata; 


以智住於方便地,

修習菩薩善巧行,

為善丈夫所修行,

是為諸佛最勝教;


Abiding in the ground of skillful means with wisdom, 

Cultivating the excellent practices of bodhisattvas, 

Practicing what is cultivated by good men, 

This is the supreme teaching of the buddhas; 


常離不應方便者,

如來說此為佛地,

若與智和佛隨喜,

是名如來最勝教;


Always avoiding inappropriate skillful means, 

The Tathāgata says this is the ground of buddhahood, 

If one harmonizes with wisdom and the Buddha rejoices, 

This is called the supreme teaching of the Tathāgata;


佛地廣大非二乘,

凡愚無智生毀謗,

智者諸佛所攝受,

是名如來最勝教。


The Buddha's level is vast and not for the two vehicles,
Fools and the ignorant give rise to slander and denigration,
The wise are embraced by the Buddhas,
This is called the Tathāgata's supreme teaching. 


如來善知此法門,

諸天恭敬所供養、

千億梵眾恒隨喜,

如來猶說三昧不?


The Tathāgata well knows this Dharma door,
The devas respectfully make offerings to him,
The thousand koṭis of Brahmās always rejoice;
Does the Tathāgata still speak this Samādhi


無量千龍恒禮拜、

緊那金翅常讚歎,

菩提樹下所得者,

如來猶說三昧不?


The countless thousand nāgas always pay homage, 

The kiṃnara and garuḍa always praise, 

What is attained under the Bodhi tree;

Does the Tathāgata still speak this Samādhi


常為智人所求者,

是善勝法之資財,

非為財施無上藥,

如來猶說三昧不?


It is always sought by the wise, 

It is the excellent Dharma's treasure and wealth, 

It is not the unsurpassed medicine of material giving;

Does the Tathāgata still speak this Samādhi


智慧腑藏辯無盡,

能出億妙修多羅,

善知三界如實智,

如來猶說三昧不?


The treasury of wisdom and inexhaustible eloquence, 

It can produce billions of sūtras, 

It well knows the three realms with true wisdom;

Does the Tathāgata still speak this Samādhi


說於船筏渡彼岸,

不為四瀑之所漂,

令名聞鬘得增長,

是以說此三昧定。


Speaking of the raft to cross to the other shore, 

Not being carried away by the four floods, 

Increasing the garland of renown, 

Therefore, this Samādhi is spoken of. 


讚歎十種最勝力、

及讚人中大牛王,

菩薩功德勝無盡,

正由得是三昧故;


Praising the ten supreme powers, 

And praising the great bull king among humans, 

The bodhisattva's virtues are supreme and inexhaustible, 

Because of attaining this Samādhi


說於慈心除瞋恚,

行大悲人大喜、捨,

於大乘者得穌息,

正由說此勝三昧;


Speaking of the mind of kindness to eliminate anger, 

Practicing great compassion, great joy, and equanimity, 

Attaining peace and ease in the Mahāyāna

Is because of speaking this supreme Samādhi


為師子吼說勝行,

此是佛智勝阿含,

一切諸法體性印,

如是三昧佛所說;


Making lion's roars and speaking of supreme practices, 

This is the supreme teaching of the Buddha's wisdom, 

The seal of the nature of all dharmas, 

Such a Samādhi is spoken by the Buddha. 


能招一切種智智,

求菩提者之園苑,

此能破壞魔軍眾,

謂是佛說勝寂定;


It can attract the wisdom of all kinds of wisdom, 

A garden for those seeking bodhi

It can destroy the army of Māra, 

Spoken by the Buddha, the supreme tranquil Samādhi.


能生正覺之功德,

是一切法自性印,

無生寂滅妙法印,

導師所說勝三昧;


It can produce the merit of right awakening, 

This is the seal of the self-nature of all dharmas, 

The seal of the wondrous Dharma of non-arising and quiescence, 

The supreme Samādhi spoken by the guide; 


於住法者作明術,

在怨讎中而不現,

如法降伏諸魔官,

導師說是勝三昧;


It makes those abiding in the Dharma have the art of illumination, 

While not appearing in the midst of enemies, 

Subduing the māras and their officials according to the Dharma, 

The guide speaks this supreme Samādhi


顯示無礙辯才地、

諸力、解脫及諸根、

最勝十八不共法,

由斯三昧得是法。


It reveals the ground of unobstructed eloquence, 

The powers, liberations, and faculties, 

The eighteen uncommon qualities of the supreme ones, 

By means of this Samādhi one attains these dharmas; 


求十力者之實法、

諸佛勝智之本因,

佛大丈夫所說法,

憐愍救護世間故。


The true Dharma of those seeking the ten powers, 

The fundamental cause of the supreme knowledge of the Buddhas, 

The Dharma spoken by the Buddha, the Great Hero, 

Out of compassion and to rescue the world; 


最勝佛子所攝受、

求解脫者所欲樂,

聞是寂靜難見定,

為諸佛子之所愛。


Embraced by the supreme Buddha sons, 

Desired by those seeking liberation, 

Hearing this tranquil and difficult to see Samādhi

It is cherished by the Buddha sons.


諸佛滿足智慧處,

智慧菩薩起求心,

其心清淨無煩惱,

應修如是寂滅定;


The place where the buddhas are fully endowed with wisdom, 

The bodhisattvas of wisdom arouse the mind of seeking, 

Their minds are pure and free from afflictions, 

They should cultivate such a tranquil Samādhi


身業清淨、口亦淨,

如來為示解脫門,

無有雜穢愛欲縛,

應當勤修是三昧;


Their bodily actions are pure and their speech is also pure, 

The Tathāgata shows them the gate of liberation, 

Free from defilement and the bonds of desire, 

They should diligently cultivate this Samādhi


不生貪愛、瞋恚地,

速能獲得大智慧,

能起於明滅無明,

是故應修寂滅定;


Not giving rise to the ground of greed and anger, 

They quickly attain great wisdom, 

They can give rise to illumination and extinguish ignorance, 

Therefore they should cultivate this tranquil Samādhi


求解脫者令得滿、

求三昧者必剋獲,

離譏毀譽如來眼,

應當修習是三昧;


Those seeking liberation will attain fulfillment, 

Those seeking this Samādhi will certainly obtain it;

Free from slander and praise is the Tathāgata's eye;

They should cultivate this Samādhi


遊行通力多佛剎,

神足能見諸佛德,

陀羅尼門得不難,

應修如是勝寂定;


Traveling through many buddha lands with supernormal powers, 

Their supernormal powers can see the virtues of the buddhas, 

The dhāraṇī gates are not difficult to attain, 

They should cultivate such a supreme and tranquil Samādhi;


加持念根得菩提,

亦能加持見多佛,

以微細智說無生,

修是三昧得不難。


By cultivating the faculty of mindfulness, one attains bodhi, 

And can also uphold the vision of many buddhas, 

With subtle wisdom, one explains non-arising, 

Practising this Samādhi is not difficult. 


不應法者難覺悟,

遠離一切文字故,

不以音聲能了解,

曾不聞定故不知。


Those who do not accord with the Dharma are difficult to awaken, 

Because they are far removed from all words and letters, 

They cannot understand through sounds, 

Because they have never heard of this Samādhi, they do not know it. 


智慧菩薩已解了,

如法王說而能知,

寂滅無毀能測量,

但為救度世間故。


Wise bodhisattvas have already understood, 

They can know as the Dharma King explains, 

Silent and unblemished, they can measure it, 

But only for the sake of saving the world. 


勇猛精進能善持,

堅固護念恒不失,

盡苦智慧及滅智,

佛猶說是三昧不?


With courageous diligence, they can uphold well, 

Steadfastly protecting mindfulness and never losing it, 

Exhausting the wisdom of suffering and the wisdom of cessation, 

Does the Buddha still speak of this Samādhi


演說一切法無生、

亦說一切諸有生,

諸佛如來妙智最,

佛猶說是三昧不?』


Explaining that all dharmas are unborn, 

And also explaining that all in existence is born,

Is the supreme wisdom of the buddhas and tathāgatas;

Does the Buddha still speak of this Samādhi?'


是法童子所顯示,

八十億千那由他,

得勝隨順音聲忍,

不退轉於勝菩提。


This Dharma was revealed by the dharmic youth

And eighty koṭis of a thousand nayutas of beings

Attained the patience of conforming to the sound of victory, 

And non-retrogression from supreme bodhi. 


堅固力王報子言:


『是佛、世尊今猶在。』


王問童子如是言:


『汝於何處聞是法?』


The King Dṛḍhabala replied to his son, 


'This Buddha, the Bhagavān, is still here.' 


The king asked the youth:


'Where did you hear this Dharma?'


子言:


『聽我,剎利王!

我曾見於十億佛,

於一劫中悉供養,

具足諮問此寂定。


The son said: 


'Listen, O Kṣatriya King! 

I have seen ten billion Buddhas, 

And in one kalpa, I fully made offerings to them all, 

And asked about this tranquil Samādhi


已於九十四劫中,

常得了知宿命智,

從此不生胞胎中,

正由修此三昧力。


In ninety-four kalpas

I always attained the knowledge of past lives, 

And was not born from a womb, 

Because of the power of practicing this Samādhi


於彼佛所恒聽法,

聞已深信而修習,

我常堅固起此信,

必證菩提無有疑。


I always listened to the Dharma from those Buddhas, 

Deeply believed in it after hearing it, and cultivated it, 

I always firmly generated this faith, 

Certain that I would attain bodhi without doubt.


受持讀誦三昧時,

若有人來問於我,

乃至夢中無疑網,

要必成於無上道。


When I receive, uphold, and recite the Samādhi

If someone comes to ask me, 

Even in dreams, I will have no doubts, 

And must certainly attain the unsurpassed path. 


我從得於無貪愛,

自知決定必成佛,

亦常如是起欲樂,

不知何時得菩提?


I have attained freedom from greed and attachment, 

And know for sure that I will become a Buddha, 

Also, I always arouse the joy of curiosity

Not knowing when I will attain bodhi


為學受持勝三昧,

若有比丘教我者,

我於彼人生恭敬,

亦如恭敬於諸佛。


To study and uphold the supreme Samādhi

If there is a bhikṣu who teaches me, 

I will give rise to respect for that person, 

Like respecting all buddhas. 


我於彼人教一偈,

修行菩薩順忍時,

好心瞻仰如善師,

卑形恭敬而供養。


I will teach that person one gāthā

When practicing the bodhisattva's patience of accord;

With a good mind, I look up to him like a good teacher, 

Humbling my form and respectfully making offerings. 


老、少、中年比丘所,

慚愧謙下生恭敬,

恭敬於彼得現稱,

福德後世名增長。


Among the bhikṣus of old, young, and middle age, 

With a sense of shame, modesty, and humility, I give rise to respect, 

I respect them and attain present renown, 

So that the merit and virtue of my future lifetimes will increase.


於相違諍不忻樂,

我時安住於少事,

能知惡業趣惡道、

能知善業趣善道。


I did not delight in disputes that were contrary to the Dharma, 

And I was able to abide in few affairs. 

I was able to know the evil deeds that lead to evil realms 

And the good deeds that lead to good realms. 


不應法說放逸者,

於彼聞於不愛語,

亦自思念己惡業,

凡作業者無失壞。


Those who are negligent and do not accord with the Dharma 

Hear unpleasant words from them,
And also contemplate their own evil deeds. 

But whatever deeds are done, there is no loss or destruction. 


我時不瞋亦不慢,

佛說忍力勤修行,

諸佛恒常讚說忍,

修忍易得菩提道。


At such a time, I am neither angry nor arrogant. 

The Buddha taught the diligent practice of the power of patience, 

And the buddhas always praised patience. 

It is easy to attain the path to bodhi by practicing patience. 


我本持戒恒清淨,

亦令眾生住淨戒;

恒常讚歎戒最上,

由住淨戒人信受;


From the start, I maintained pure precepts, 

And also caused sentient beings to abide in pure precepts. 

I always praised the supreme precepts, 

And because of abiding in pure precepts, people had faith in them. 


恒常讚歎蘭若處,

亦自安住淨持戒;

勸人修行八戒齋,

亦復教彼學菩提;


I always praised in the araṇya wilderness, 

And also myself abided in pure upholding of the precepts. 

I encouraged people to practice the eight precepts, 

And also taught them to train for bodhi


勸人修習淨梵行,

亦復教彼住法義;

為他顯示菩提道,

於命終後見多佛。


I encourage people to cultivate pure noble conduct

And also teach them to abide in the meaning of the Dharma. 

I reveal the path to bodhi for others, 

And after death, they will see many Buddhas.


我念過去世劫時,

有佛號曰妙聲身,

於彼佛前發弘誓,

恒安忍力不傾動。


I recall in a past life, for a kalpa,

There was a Buddha named Svarāṅgaghoṣa, 

Before whom I made a great vow, 

Always enduring the power of patience without wavering. 


本作如是要誓時,

歲經八億四千萬,

時魔譏毀來罵辱,

我心初無有變動。


When I made this vow, 

It was 84 million years ago,
At that time Māra came to ridicule and scold me, 

But my mind was never disturbed. 


爾時降伏魔官已,

知我慈忍堅固力,

以清淨心接足禮,

五百眾發菩提心。


At that time, having subdued Māra's officials,

Knowing my firm power of kindness and patience,
With a pure mind, he bowed at my feet, 

And 500 people generated bodhicitta 


我於往昔無慳悋,

恒常讚歎行布施,

大富豐財有譽聲、

於飢饉時為施主。


In the past, I was not stingy,

Always praising the practice of giving, rich and abundant, 

With a reputation for wealth, 

In times of famine, I was a benefactor. 


若有比丘持是定、

或能修習為他說,

即自恒常供養彼,

作是心者令得佛。


If there are bhikṣus who uphold this Samādhi

Or cultivate it and teach it to others, 

They will always make offerings to them, 

With this mind, they will attain buddhahood. 


我時有彼無上業,

見佛、世尊人中上,

生生恒受具足戒,

得為比丘聽法師。


At that time, I had that unsurpassed karma, 

Seeing the Buddha, the Bhagavān, the supreme among humans, 

Life after life, always receiving the complete precepts, 

Becoming a bhikṣu who listened to the Dharma teacher. 


我常樂於頭陀行、

亦住空寂蘭若林,

不為飲食故諂曲,

少分所得皆知足。


I always enjoyed practicing the dhūtas

Also dwelling in the empty and tranquil araṇya wilderness groves, 

Not for the sake of food and drink, being deceitful, 

But rather knowing contentment with even a little.


我一切時無嫉妬、

亦常不著於居家,

既不著家、不憎妬,

欣樂蘭若無退失。


I was never jealous at any time, 

And never dwelt in a household. 

Not dwelling in a household, I was not envious, 

And delighted in the araṇya wilderness without retrogressing. 


我時恒住於慈行,

設有毀罵不瞋恚,

以慈悲心善調柔,

名聞花鬘滿十方。


At that time, I always abided in the practice of loving-kindness, 

Even if there were slander and abuse, I did not become angry. 

With a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, I was well-tamed and gentle, 

And the garland of my reputation filled the ten directions. 


常習少欲而知足,

樂於苦行修蘭若,

亦恒分衛不厭倦,

要誓堅固而不動。


I always cultivated few desires and knew contentment, 

Delighted in ascetic practices and cultivated the araṇya wildreness

Also always receiving alms without weariness, 

With firm vows that did not waver. 


習行信心常清淨,

於如來所信增上,

良由信佛有勝利,

諸根不缺恒端正。


Cultivating the practice of faith, always pure, 

My faith in the Tathāgata increased, 

Because of the superior benefits of believing in the Buddha, 

My faculties were not deficient and always upright. 


如佛所說即能行,

成就如是堅固行,

是堅固行有何利?

諸天供養喜勸請。


Just as the Buddha taught, I was able to practice, 

Accomplishing such firm practices, 

What benefits are there in these firm practices? 

The devas made offerings and joyfully encouraged me. 


我所演說之功德,

世間上德及餘德,

其有智人應修學,

為求菩提道行者。


The merits I have expounded, 

The supreme virtues of the world and other virtues, 

The wise should cultivate and study them, 

For those who seek the path of bodhi. 


我今憶念難行行,

本於往昔常修行,

若今演說時節久,

共汝相隨向佛所。』


I now recall the difficult practices I practiced, 

Always practising in the past;

If I were to expound them at this time, it would take too long, 

So let us go together to the Buddha's presence.'


彼大利智勝菩薩,

獲得具足五神通,

以神足力亦詣佛,

與梵天王多千萬。


The bodhisattva of great wisdom and virtue, 

Having attained the five supernatural powers, 

Also went to the Buddha with his spiritual powers, 

Along with many thousands of brahmā deva kings. 


堅固力王心欣喜,

與諸眷屬億萬眾,

俱共往詣如來尊,

頂禮接足住佛前。


King Dṛḍhabala was overjoyed, 

Together with his retinue of billions of people, 

They all went to the honoured Tathāgata, 

Prostrated and touched his feet, standing before the Buddha. 


佛時知王心樂欲,

即為王說此三昧,

是王聞此三昧已,

棄捨王位而出家。


The Buddha then knew the king's joyful desire, 

And expounded this Samādhi for the king, 

When the king heard this Samādhi

He abandoned his royal position and left home. 


其出家已於此定,

受持、讀誦、為他說,

後時過於六千劫,

得佛號曰蓮花上。


After leaving home, he received this Samādhi

Having taken up and borne it, he read and recited it, and explained it to others, 

After which he passed away after six thousand kalpas

And attained buddhahood, as a Buddha named Padmottara


王有眷屬六百億,

俱時從王詣佛者,

彼聞如是勝三昧,

欣喜踊躍亦出家。


The king had a retinue of six hundred billion people, 

All of whom went to the Buddha at the same time as the king, 

When they heard this supreme Samādhi

They were overjoyed and also left home.


其出家者於此定,

受持、讀誦、為他說,

劫過六十那由他,

同一劫中悉成佛,


Those who left home in this Samādhi 

Took up, bore, read, recited, and explained it for others;

After sixty nayutas of kalpas have passed, 

All became buddhas in the same kalpa,

號善調伏智上佛,

無量人天興供養,

一一諸佛大名稱,

度脫恒河沙數眾。


With the name of Buddha Ananta­jñānanottara

And they were worshipped by countless humans and devas;

Each of those buddhas with great renown, Liberated as many beings as the sands of the Ganges. 


堅固力王我身是,

修行勝妙菩提行;

昔時我子五百人,

是彼最後護法者。


The King Dṛḍhabala, was my [father and I was Śirībala],
And I practised the supreme and wondrous bodhisattva conduct;
The five hundred sons of mine in the past
At last became Dharma protectors. 


我於如是千億劫,

勇猛精進離懈怠,

專心求此勝三昧,

正為無上菩提故。


For a thousand koṭis of kalpas like this,
I was courageous and diligent, free from laziness,
Single-mindedly seeking this supreme Samādhi,
Solely for unsurpassed bodhi


童子!若有諸菩薩,

欲得如此勝定者,

精進勇猛不顧命,

應當學我勤精進。」


O Youth! If there are bodhisattvas
Who wish to attain such a supreme Samādhi

They should be courageous and diligent, not sparing their lives, 

And should learn from me to be diligent."
