12. The Training According to the Samādhi

「童子!以是義故,菩薩摩訶薩能如是知不可思議諸法體性者,得如是功德之利,讚說如來真實功德,不謗如來言非真實。何以故?如來已得諸法為世所知,是人如實知於彼法,亦知無量如來功德能知如實不可思議佛法。何以故?童子!佛有無量無邊功德不可思議,遠離於心。以是義故,餘不能思、不能稱量。何以故?童子!其心無性、又無形色,不可覩見。

"O Youth! For this reason, if bodhisattva-mahāsattvas are able to know the inconceivable nature of all dharmas in this way, they will attain such benefits of merit, praise the true merits of the Tathāgata, and not slander the Tathāgata, saying that they are not true. Why is this? Because the Tathāgata has attained all dharmas that are known in the world. This person truly knows those dharmas and also knows the immeasurable merits of the Tathāgata, able to know the true and inconceivable Buddha Dharma. Why is this? Son of good family! The Buddha has immeasurable, boundless merits that are inconceivable and far removed from the mind. For this reason, others cannot think of them or measure them. Why is this? O Youth! The mind has no nature and also no form or appearance that can be seen.

「童子!如是心體性即是佛功德體性,如是佛功德體性即是一切諸法體性。以是義故,童子!若菩薩說一切法體性一義如實知者,名為菩薩寂滅於心善解三界出離善根。如實了知、如實知見、如實說無有異說,隨說而行無所執著,出過一切諸煩惱地、過於欲界色界、解脫無色界、過於名地、過於聲地。善解離文字法、善解分別字智、善解離語言法,知於文字、善於文字、善於字差別智、廣知字智、善解一切法差別智、善於一切法廣差別智、善分別一切處法智,與不可思議佛法相應,魔王波旬及諸魔民所不能壞。」

"O Youth! In this way, the nature of the mind is the nature of the Buddha's merits. The nature of the Buddha's merits is the nature of all dharmas. For this reason, O Youth, if bodhisattvas truly know the single meaning of the nature of all dharmas, they are called bodhisattvas who are tranquil in mind and well understand the good roots of liberation from the three realms. They truly understand, truly know and see, truly speak without speaking differently, act in accordance with what they speak without grasping or attachment, transcend all grounds of affliction, transcend the desire realm and form realm, are liberated from the formless realm, transcend the ground of names and the ground of sounds. They well understand the Dharma of being free from words, well understand the wisdom of distinguishing letters, well understand the Dharma of being free from language, know letters, are good at letters, well understand the wisdom of distinguishing letters, widely know the wisdom of letters, well understand the wisdom of distinguishing all dharmas, are good at the wide and distinguishing wisdom of all dharmas, well understand the wisdom of distinguishing all dharma-ranges, and are in accord with inconceivable Buddha-Dharma. King Māra and all Māra's retinue cannot destroy them."

說是法門時,有八億那由他諸天人等得修無障法忍,一切皆為諸佛授阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記,過四百八十萬阿僧祇劫得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,種種名號、國土差別、壽命齊等。

When this Dharma gate was spoken, eighty koṭis of nayutas of devas and humans attained the practice of the unobstructed patience at dharmas, all of whom were given the prediction of anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi by all the Buddhas, that they would attain anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi after four hundred and eighty koṭis of asaṃkhyeya kalpas, with various names, differences in lands, and equal lifespans.

爾時,世尊而說偈言:
At that time, the Bhagavān spoke the following gāthā:

「若有智慧諸菩薩,  

趣向勝妙菩提道,

善於法義諸言說,  

能行一切法體性。


"If there are wise bodhisattvas,

Who seek the supreme and wondrous bodhi path,

They are skilled in the meanings of the Dharma and all expressions,

And can practice the nature of all dharmas.


口常宣說真實語,  

稱佛實德而演說,

能知一切諸佛法,  

於三界尊無有疑。

Their mouths always proclaim true words,

Describing the Buddha's true virtues,

They can understand all the Buddha's Dharma teachings,

And have no doubts about the honored ones of the three realms.


一切諸法同一義,  

以修空故如實知,

彼無種種別異相,  

於此一義已修學。

All dharmas have the same meaning,
Because of practicing emptiness, they truly know,
They have no various different characteristics,
And have already cultivated its single meaning.

無分別想分別想,  

眾生、壽命,我、人想,

盡與無盡如是想,  

斷此諸想悉無餘。

Without discriminating thoughts or discriminating thoughts,
Thoughts of a sentient beings, soul, self, and person,
Exhausted and inexhausted, such thoughts,
Cutting off all these thoughts without remainder.

不見如來有其色,  

以知諸法自性無,

亦非諸想隨形好,  

以斷一切顛倒故。

Not seeing the Tathāgata as having form,

Knowing that all dharmas are without self-existence,

Also not following characteristics and marks,
Because all inverted views are cut off.

一切諸佛不思議,  

遠離於心體寂滅,

若人能得如是知,  

真見無上兩足尊。

All buddhas are inconceivable,
Far removed from the mind, their bodies tranquil and ceased;

If one can attain such knowledge,

One truly sees the unsurpassed honored one among bipeds.

若有能知神我想,  

於中發起勝智慧,

如是知於諸法已,  

彼便得名清淨眼。

If one can know the thought of the self,

And give rise to superior wisdom in regard to it,

Thus knowing all dharmas,

One will then attain the pure eye.

是人無有諸障礙,  

大智悟解出離道,

充滿具足二種因,  

無有一切諸願樂。


Such a person has no obstructions,

Their great wisdom comprehends the path of liberation,

Fully endowed with the two kinds of causes,

They are without any wishes at all.

於真實處如實見,  

無有一切非實語,

是人所有諸言論,  

隨順一切儀式法。


Seeing reality as it truly is,

There is no word they use that is not true;

All the words of this person
Are in accord with all ritual and Dharma methods.


智者出過於欲界,  

超色無色煩惱地,

能於三界離染著,  

行在世間利眾生。

The wise transcend the desire realm,

Surpassing the afflictive states of the form and formless realms,

Able to be free from attachment to the three realms,

Their conduct benefits beings in the world.

超過一切名字地,  

及過音聲體性空,

雖經久時演說法,  

於彼言說無所依。


Transcending all grounds of names and words,

And surpassing the nature of sound, which is empty,

Even though they expound the Dharma for a long time,

They have no reliance on those words.

遠離諸想及戲論,  

斷除顛倒諸惡見,

於其智慧善決定,  

是人勇健行如空。

Far removed from all thoughts and frivolous arguments,

Eliminating inverted views and evil views,

With wisdom well determined,

Such people bravely practice like empty space.

若魔多億那由他,  

為亂彼意作是言,

悉能映蔽是魔眾,  

不從魔力自在攝,


Even if koṭīs of nayutas of māras

Attempt to disturb their minds,

They can all outshine this māra host,

Not subject to the power of māras, self-mastery complete,

棄捨一切諸魔業,  

戒行清淨無熱惱,

若能深樂禪樂者,  

彼則能知世間空。


Abandoning all the deeds of māras,

Their pure conduct free from afflictions,

If they can deeply delight in the bliss of dhyāna,

They will then be able to know the emptiness of the world.


若說五陰是世間,  

已知彼法體空寂,

既無其滅亦無生,  

一切諸法如虛空。


If one says the five aggregates are the world,

One will know that those dharmas are empty and quiescent,

Since there is no extinction, there is also no birth,
All dharmas are like space.


寧當棄捨自身命,  

終不毀犯如來教,

於戒護持到彼岸,  

隨其所願悉往生。


One would rather abandon one's own life,

Than to ever violate the Tathāgata's teachings;

Protecting the precepts and reaching the other shore,

One will be born in whatever realm one wishes.


遊行無量諸佛剎,  

見多那由他億佛,

終不悕欲生天上,  

遠離一切諸願樂。


Wandering through countless buddha lands,

Seeing many nayutas of koṭīs of buddhas,

One will never desire to be born in the heavens,

Far removed from all desires and pleasures.


是人不捨勤精進,  

於少時間行法行,

於其十方諸佛所,  

善能讚詠而稱歎。」


Such a person will not abandon diligent effort,

In a short time practicing the Dharma,

In the buddhas' presence in the ten directions,

He will be able to praise and extol them well."


爾時月光童子身,  

得聞如是寂滅定,

棄捨一切利養事,  

修行諸佛所歎法:


At that time, the body of the youth Candraprabha

Hearing such a tranquil and still Concentration,

Abandoned all matters of gain and benefit,

And practiced the Dharma praised by the buddhas:


「若有欲得自然智,  

我為一切世間上,

應當學是勝三昧,  

若如是學人天最。」


"If one wishes to attain spontaneous wisdom,

That 'I will be the highest for all worlds,'
They should learn this supreme Samādhi,

If one learns like this, they will be the best among humans and devas."
