10. Entry into the City

"O Youth! For this reason, if you wish to achieve the firm conduct of a bodhisattva, you should train in this way. Why? O Youth! For a bodhisattva with firm conduct, attaining anuttarā-samyaksaṃbodhi is not difficult, let alone this Samādhi."

At that time, the youth Candraprabha addressed the Buddha, saying

"It is rare indeed, O Bhagavān! The Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Fully Awakened One, has skillfully expounded on firm conduct, explaining well the Dharma teaching of entering this Samādhi, and has established how all bodhisattvas should train. This is indeed the practice of all tathāgatas, not within the realm of the śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas, let alone those of other paths.

"O Bhagavān! I shall now abide in this firm conduct. Why? Because I wish to train just as the Buddha has trained, I now wish to train; I wish to understand that anuttarā-samyaksaṃbodhi, I wish to defeat Māra Pāpīyas and his retinue, and I wish to liberate all sentient beings from suffering. I humbly request the Tathāgata, along with his retinue of the bhikṣu saṅgha, to graciously accept my invitation for tomorrow's meal out of compassion for me."

The Tathāgata and the bhikṣu saṅgha then silently accepted the youth Candraprabha's invitation for the meal on the following day, in order to protect him.

At that time, the youth Candraprabha, having received the Tathāgata's acceptance of his offering, was filled with joy and delight. Deeply gratified, he rose from his seat, bore his right shoulder, made obeisance at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, and then respectfully departed.

Then, the youth Candraprabha returned to Rājagṛha and reached his home. That night, he meticulously prepared a variety of countless exquisite foods and drinks. Throughout the great city of Rājagṛha, he hung silk banners and scattered various flowers. He set up banners, flags, and canopies, burned many kinds of incense, and set up numerous tents. He swept and cleaned the streets, removed debris, and purified the crossroads by sprinkling them with sandalwood powder and various precious gems. He scattered numerous and precious flowers, decorating the ground like a painted canvas. He adorned and decorated the city and streets with countless adornments. The entire city was decorated with utpala [blue] lotus flowers, kumuda [red] lotus flowers, padma [white] lotus flowers, and puṇḍarīka [pure white] lotus flowers. Inside his home, he used only the best sandalwood paste to anoint his dwelling, decorated it with various adornments, and hung precious canopies, preparing the finest food for the Buddha, the Bhagavān.

At that time, the youth so adorned the city, streets, and his home, and prepared the offerings, completing everything within a single night. At dawn, accompanied by eighty nayutas of bodhisattvas, headed by the bodhisattva Ajita (i.e. Maitreya), including those such as: Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva, Gandhahastin Bodhisattva, Ratnaketu Bodhisattva, Durabhisambhava Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī Kumārabhūta Bodhisattva, Vīrasena Bodhisattva, Subhāhu Bodhisattva, Ratnakusuma Bodhisattva, and Amoghadarśin Bodhisattva, among bodhisattva mahāsattvas as the leaders; these great bodhisattvas, surrounding [the youth], left the great city of Rājagṛha to go to the Tathāgata. They tidied their robes, made obeisance with their heads, and circumambulated him to the right three times. Then [the youth] addressed the Buddha, saying:

"O Bhagavān! The time for the meal has arrived, and all preparations are complete. We humbly request you to kindly come to Rājagṛha and graciously accept my offering in my home."

At that time, the Bhagavān, at the appropriate time, donned his robe and took his bowl. Accompanied by a hundred thousand great bhikṣus, and innumerable hundreds of thousands of nayutas of bodhisattva mahāsattvas, devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas, who all respectfully made offerings, praised the Buddha's great power, his great supernormal abilities, his great transformations, and his great deportment. They emitted hundreds of thousands of nayutas of light rays, performed hundreds of thousands of kinds of music, and rained various heavenly flowers as they entered Rājagṛha to accept the youth Candraprabha's offering.

The Buddha, having accumulated countless wholesome roots over a long period, placed his right foot with a thousand-spoked wheel mark on the threshold of the city gate. At that moment, unprecedented miraculous manifestations appeared:

"When the buddhas, the tathāgatas, enter a city, it is the Dharma that all such miraculous manifestations occur. Now, listen carefully, and I will describe the divine virtues that appear when a buddha enters a city."

He then spoke a gātha, saying:

Emanate from beneath the Dharma King's feet,

All the hells become cool,

Suffering is removed, and joy is obtained.

The Ten-Powered One expounds the Dharma,

Devas and humans attain pure vision,

Countless beings,

Become certain in the path to Buddhahood.

The Unequalled One enters the city,

Manifesting these miraculous transformations,

Even in countless kalpas,

The Buddha's words are difficult to exhaust.

These are the immeasurable virtues of the Sugata,

The king of bulls who has reached the other shore,

The one who has reached the ultimate of all special virtues;

Bow your heads to the Buddha, the field of merit."
