The Graduate School of IAS was established in 2026 at Niigata University (the former institution: Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture). IAS includes both humanities and sciences, so it encourages students to progress their research using interdisciplinary approaches.
Program: Master's Program in Arts and Humanities
Subprogram: Western Sociocultural and Linguistic Studies
We have 4 faculty members of linguistics and 3 of literature. In English linguistics, we have some seminars of syntax, semantics and pragmatics in both generative grammar and cognitive grammar. In English literature, we have some seminars of British literature, American literature and English/Western cultural studies. Students can also take seminars in other groups such as typological linguistics, Japanese linguistics or European history. Their works can be published in bulletins: "Universality and Individuality in Language" and "Studies of the European and American Languages, Societies, and Cultures".
