PhD Position Opportunity
Start Date: Sep. 2026
We are inviting applications for 1-2 fully funded 4-year PhD positions in Magnetism and Spin-Orbitronics Group, based in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The position will start in September 2026.
Project Overview
The PhD project focuses on low-dimensional magnetic systems, with a particular emphasis on the excitation of spin and orbital currents and their coupling with local magnetization. This interdisciplinary research lies at the intersection of condensed matter physics and materials science, aiming to develop novel thin-film materials and explore fundamental mechanisms relevant to spin-orbitronics, with promising applications in future data storage and logic devices.
Key Research Areas
Development of advanced thin-film materials and device structures
Excitation and manipulation of spin and orbital angular momentum in low-dimensional systems
Study of magnetization dynamics and transport properties
Training and Skill Development
The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in:
Thin film deposition using magnetron sputtering
Nanofabrication using photolithography and electron beam lithography
Material characterization via XRD, AFM, XPS, SEM, and TEM
Magnetic property measurements
High-field, low-temperature electrical transport measurements
Who Should Apply?
We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong academic background and a passion for research. Ideal applicants will meet the following criteria:
A solid background in Physics or Materials Science, with a particular interest in experimental research in condensed matter physics, spintronics, and magnetism
Demonstrated analytical, writing, and communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
Prior experience with programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW is preferred but not required
Professional working proficiency in English
The Magnetism and Spin-Orbitronics Group is committed to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, or disability. Research shows that women and underrepresented groups often hesitate to apply unless they meet all requirements. Don’t hold yourself back, if you’re excited about this opportunity, we strongly encourage you to apply.
