Miami / Talawanda Science Week - public outreach to school children
2013 (May 13-17)
This is the third year that we participated Miami/Talawanda Science week.
Dr. Blitz, graduate students Clara Do Amaral, Zachary Callahan, Blake Chaffee, Keely Corder, Xian Liu, Minqian Shen, and Bobby Spencer, and seniors Andrew McMormick and Jessica Wilson volunteered.
2012 (May 7-11)
This is the second year that we participated Miami/Talawanda Science week.
Over 120 Talawanda elementary students from grade 1-5 visited our human physiology teaching lab.
Graduate students (Sean Taylor, M. Clara Do Amaral, Shiva Priya Dharshan Senthil Kumar, Xian Liu, Zachary Callahan, David Milewski, Sushmita Ghosh, Padma Ravisankar, Aswati Subramanian, Cheng Guo), Undergraduat students (Ashley Goudjo-Ako, John McChesney, Keith Schilstra, N Paul Schick, Kathryn Hackett, Joshua Carey) and technical staff Zheng Zhu volunteered.
Third grade teacher Mrs. Karen Shearer: "We had a wonderful experience in your lab. We all enjoyed it immensely and learned a lot."
First grade teacher Mrs. Jodi Clemens: "Thank you for opening your lab to my class of first graders for Science Day. They really enjoyed learning about the lungs and heart. The active engagement is so important for the 1st graders, so your lab was a big hit! :)"
2011 (May 9-13, 2011)
We work with Mr. Jeff Winslow, the Talawanda school district science and math instructional leader, and set up a group of activities that introduce school children to human physiology and anatomy. The goals are to spark scientific interest, motivate learning, and promote critical thinking.
During the week of May 9-13, 2011, nearly 100 Talawanda elementary students from grade 2-5 visited our human physiology teaching lab and participate in a series of hands-on activities.
