Dr. Shijuan Chen is an assistant professor and a remote sensing scientist at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Before joining UMass Boston, she was a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University. She earned her Ph.D. in Earth and Environment from Boston University. Her research focuses on land system change monitoring, the underlying drivers of change, and the resulting impacts on communities using a combination of remote sensing technology, field measurements, and socio-economic data. Her research interests include:
Remote sensing and geospatial science
Land cover and land use change
Deforestation and forest degradation
Terrestrial ecosystem and carbon cycle
Urbanization and human-environment interactions
She has served in lead roles in multiple research projects funded by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and USGS (United States Geological Survey).
