Sri S. N. Sundaresan (1931-2019), maternal grandfather to Shiama and Shankara, had a distinguished career at the Life Insurance Corporation of India, from which he retired in 1991 as Executive Director. He had a lifelong passion for Carnatic music, and especially the music of Saint Thyagaraja. He was well known for his patronage of this art form through his involvement in music sabhas in Calicut, Chennai, Mumbai and Trivandrum, and for his support of many budding musicians. He was especially proud of his grandsons' musical pursuits and encouraged them wholeheartedly in their efforts. He immensely enjoyed listening to them sing and perform, and took great delight in learning from them. "Mani thatha" as he was referred to by Shankara and Shiama, played a very important role in the central place accorded to Carnatic music in the family. In fact, most conversations with Sri. Sundaresan revolved around some aspect of music, whether it be learning a rare kriti of Saint Thyagaraja, or a particular phrase in an unusual raga like Balahamsa. He was a naturally gifted vocalist who enjoyed close friendships with many great musicians. He was notable for his outgoing personality, helpful and caring nature, and lively sense of humour. We pay homage to his memory today and celebrate his everlasting influence on Shiama's and Shankara's musical journeys.
