Your Financial Aid Application - FAFSA or TASFA?
The Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) is used to collect information to help determine eligibility for state financial aid programs that are administered by institutions of higher education in the state of Texas. Students that are classified as a Texas Resident who cannot apply for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are encouraged to complete the TASFA. To review the FAFSA filing requirements, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov or visit the financial aid office at the institution you plan to attend.
To use this application, you cannot be paying the Texas resident tuition rate due to a waiver such as an in-state scholarship or an assistantship. Nonresidents paying the resident rate due to a waiver are still nonresidents.
Financial Aid Checklist: Undocumented Students In Texas
Texas Undocumented Students are ineligible to apply for Federal Financial Aid through FAFSA
Texas Undocumented Students may be eligible to apply for state or institutional aid through the Texas Application for State Financial Aid, known as TASFA, as long as they are classified as a Texas resident
STEP #1: Determine if you meet General Texas Residency Requirements for Undocumented Students:
❏ Graduated/will graduate from a Texas high school or received/will receive a GED certificate from Texas
❏ Lived in Texas for the three years leading up to high school graduation or GED certificate obtainment
❏ Lived or will live in Texas during the 12 months before enrolling for college Texas residency is verified through the college admissions process as The TASFA application is only accepted by Texas Colleges
STEP #2: See what Texas Schools accept TASFA

❏ Submit an admissions application for schools you are interested in through www.applytexas.org

STEP #3: Gather and Complete Supplemental TASFA Application Documents
2019 Income and Tax Info, if applicable
❏ Student Tax Form 1040 or 1099 and W2(s)
❏ Parent(s) Tax Form 1040 or 1099 and W2(s)
Tip: If parent(s) didn’t file taxes and/or don’t have an ITIN, fill out TASFA anyways indicating your situation. Special circumstances are considered. Reach out to colleges financial aid offices as well.
❏ Order Tax Return Transcript from IRS for student and parent(s)
❏ If have filed taxes before go to: www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
❏ If have never filed taxes, moved and have a change in home address, or online form doesn’t work, print out and fax Form 4506-T at: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf

❏ Affidavit of Residency Senate Bill 1526
❏ Go to each colleges website to download and print their specific affidavit form
❏ Get Affidavit of Residency notarized for free by school official
❏ If male, register for selective service
❏ If have SSN sign up online at: https://www.sss.gov/Registration/Register-Now/Registration-Form
❏ Print Selective Service Acknowledgement Letter as proof of registration by going to: https://www.sss.gov/Registration/Check-a-Registration/Verification- Form
❏ If don’t have SSN, print and fill out form: https://www.sss.gov/Portals/0/PDFs/regform_copyINT_1.pdf
❏ Leave blank the field that asks for a social security number
❏ Mail form to Selective Service System P.O. Box 94739 Palatine, IL 60094-4739
❏ Selective Service Acknowledgement Letter will arrive by mail in a few weeks
❏ Create a copy of each supplemental TASFA Application Document for each college you apply to

❏ Print and submit an individual TASFA application to each college you are applying to along with all the supplemental TASFA Application documents for that college or university.

❏ Formulario de impuestos para padres 1040 o 1099 y W2 (s)
Consejo: Si los padres no presentaron impuestos y/o no tienen un ITIN, llene TASFA de todos modos indicando su situación. A veces se consideran circunstancias especiales. También comuniquese directamente con la oficina de ayuda financiera de los colegios a los cuales está aplicando.
❏ Ordene la transcripción de la declaración de impuestos del IRS para el estudiante y sus padres
❏ Si ha presentado los impuestos antes vaya a: www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
❏ Si nunca ha presentado impuestos, se ha mudado y tiene un cambio en su domicilio, o la opción de arriba no funciona, por favor imprima y envíe por fax el formulario 4506-T:
❏ Completar el Formulario llamado “Affidavit of Residency”
❏ Visita el sitio web de cada universidad para descargar e imprimir este documento
❏ Obtenga la firma de un notario público de forma gratuita a través de su preparatoria
❏ Si es hombre, inscríbase para el servicio selectivo
