Since then we have gotten 2 more seasons that were solid but season 3 started to feel a little bit gimmicky with Sherlock escaping death and them never explaining it. I should have known because season 4 took that path and went off the deep end.

Then they have to tie it back into Mary and her being a super spy, a plotline I hated from season 3. I really could care less about Mary as some secret spy and then the melodrama keeps getting piled on.

It may seem strange but your blog post is like a healing balm for me. I have been trying to find out if ANYONE else had a negative experience watching Sherlock series 4 because I need to relate to someone! I am a huge Sherlock fan! I loved the earlier seasons. I mostly love it for the fun moments, the character development, and the exciting journey of crime solving. I feel like this series had none of that. The first episode left a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone seemed out of character, especially John. If someone is going to make a show, they have to keep some honorable characters! I need someone reliable to keep me invested and I began to lose it here.

The chances of Sherlock season 5 might not be very high, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are finished with playing Holmes and Watson. It has been six years since the last season of Sherlock, and demand for season 5 hasn't waned in this time. However, it might not be a new TV season if Sherlock returns. There is a chance that Sherlock season 5 could end up as a movie instead, at least as far as comments from creator Mark Gatiss in a July 2023 interview indicate.

Gatiss said that it is hard to get movies and TV shows like Sherlock season 5 made, something he's seen proven time and time again. Gatiss even mentioned the eight years that Edgar Wright spent working on Ant-Man for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and then ended up never getting it made before leaving the project. Gatiss has been looking at Sherlock season 5 for eight years, and that a Sherlock movie option is looking increasingly likelier.

Making Sherlock season 5 into a movie could be more realistic than another TV series. Rather than three episodes that required almost five hours of footage, one movie could check in at about two hours and the team could shoot it in a fraction of the time that they would make a TV show. An important consideration, since both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have incredibly busy schedules which could make creating more Sherlock difficult.

Sherlock theoretically wouldn't require a ton of special effects like a Cumberbatch or Freeman MCU movie, and it could be easier to fit into everyone's schedule. It also doesn't have to be a theatrical release and could end up as a streaming exclusive, fitting in with the four seasons as a package deal. It would still require a commitment from both Freeman and Cumberbatch, but it is at least more viable than Sherlock season 5.

However, there's been no concrete movement on Sherlock season 5. Because Sherlock Holmes belongs to the public domain, there will probably always be new adaptations of the character, and this is for the best. There's very little motivating a Sherlock season 5 since the actors are busy, there's no more story to tell, and the show already hit a downward trend from which it could struggle to return. As such, the only real reason for the BBC to keep making Sherlock season 5 would be that Doyle's works are in the public domain, and Sherlock Holmes is, therefore, one of the cheapest IPs on which to base televisual materials.

As driving factors go, though, this idea does little to inspire faith that Sherlock season 5 would actually be worth the investment or lead to a high-quality end product. Each iteration of Holmes in the past few decades, whether Cumberbatch's, Robert Downey Jr.'s, Johnny Lee Miller's, or Henry Cavill's, has brought something unique and interesting to the table, which helps keep the character and his world fresh and exciting. The BBC's Sherlock seems to have clearly run its course and should instead take a step back and let new adaptations take the spotlight.

When Sherlock debuted in 2010, it was a thrilling show that featured cleverly written mysteries and an entertaining detective on the case. However, the television landscape is very different from what it was in 2010, or even 2017 when Sherlock was last on television. There are countless murder mystery series, like Rian Johnson's Poker Face, that give Sherlock a lot more competition than the show had first when starting out. Suddenly, it might not seem like Sherlock season 5 would be such a special show anymore.

Even in terms of Sherlock Holmes stories, the Netflix Enola Holmes franchise has introduced a new generation to these stories and might make Sherlock season 5 look stuffy by comparison. Even with its less popular season, Sherlock has a strong legacy to be proud of without the need to return for more. However, coming back for an ill-advised Sherlock season 5 could simply prove that fans of the show have moved on.

Unfortunately, Granada and Jeremy Brett did not have time to complete the 62 Sherlock Holmes stories written by Conan Doyle. Only 41 of them have been filmed. During the first and second seasons, the part of Watson was played by David Burke. From the third season and until the end, he was replaced by Edward Hardwicke.

Though the show only ran for 13 episodes over four seasons, it received critical acclaim and garnered several award nominations and wins, including acting Emmys for Cumberbatch and Freeman, and a writing Emmy for Moffat.

So, I talk about Sherlock and what I think went wrong in season three to divide what had been a pretty happy fan base. Here is a link to the full post and you can read an excerpt below.

On Tuesday, fans get first crack at a DVD and Blu-ray set containing all three seasons of Sherlock, with outtakes, interviews, new commentaries and even collectible resin mini-busts, depicting the show's two leading men.

"What he's resorting to at the end is violence," Cumberbatch says "It's the weakest, weakest thing to do. So, to me, I think that exposes more about Sherlock ... I think you get under the skin of every character with this last season ... This is a really Freudian drama."

Mirren will play Lady Milverton in the second season of the fictional podcast, titled Moriarty: The Silent Order. Her character will act as nemesis to Professor James Moriarity, played by The Lord of The Rings actor Dominic Monaghan.

And then season three (finally) arrived. Hoo-boy. Not only did I see, I observed. And for the first time, I saw and observed a notable amount of unhappiness with the show. And with the second episode, it was certain that a shift had occurred among the fan base. It continued through the third (season finale) episode.

A significant number of folks grumbled about season three. Where there had been very little unhappiness with the first six episodes, an entire contingent of fans did not like season three and it impacted their overall attitude towards the show. It went from competing for number one to dropping out of my all time top ten.

HBO Max also airs Miss Sherlock, a Japanese series where both Holmes and Watson are played by women, a co-production between HBO Asia and Hulu Japan, while rival Netflix also ran The Irregulars, a series based on a gang of troubled street teens in Victorian London who are manipulated into solving crimes for a sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes, for one season.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Seasons Edition--Spring) is one of four titles available in March 2021. The spring season also will include Emma, The Secret Garden, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

And still. "Sherlock" Season 4 came out in 2017 so everyone's had ample time to binge on the Baker Street boys' adventures many times over. After the end credits of "The Final Problem" roll, viewers inevitably ask themselves the burning question: When, if ever, will we get a fifth season? Let's take a look at what we know so far about the release date, cast, and plot of "Sherlock" season 5.

If determining the release date of a normal show's next season is a matter of math and research, "Sherlock" would require the talents of the titular character. The first series dropped in 2010, and the next two followed at two-year intervals, giving you a fairly good idea of the show's production schedule in an optimal situation. However, 2016 only brought a single special episode, and season 4 didn't arrive until 2017, throwing off the whole "a season every other year" schedule. What's more, co-creator Stephen Moffat told Radio Times in 2018 that the release date of the eventual season 5 is very much up in the air.

The biggest reason for the "we'll see" approach may be that the key people are all crazy busy. Apart from Cumberbatch and Freeman, Moffat and co-creator Mark Gatiss (who also portrays Mycroft Holmes on the show) followed season 4 with a "Sherlock"-style horror drama series, "Dracula," which dropped on early 2020.

For what it's worth, though, the door is open for season 5, should the stars align. Cumberbatch stated in 2021 that he'd be fully on board for more "Sherlock" ... in an ideal situation. "Maybe one day, if the script's right. And I say 'the script,' maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now."

The first and foremost condition of "Sherlock" season 5 ever happening is, of course, the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson. Given that Moffat and Gatiss will likely continue to hold the reins whenever the season actually drops, it's virtually a given that Gatiss will also make an appearance as Holmes' ever-pretentious elder brother, Mycroft.
