Calling all students in grades 4-8 who love to sing!
The Sheridan County Youth Choir is an auditioned choir for students in grades 4–8. Auditions are simple and supportive—there are three parts, all of which can be practiced ahead of time and will also be taught and rehearsed at the audition itself.
The goal of the audition is not to be intimidating, but to make sure each student has the basic musical tools they’ll need to thrive and enjoy their time in the choir—not feel overwhelmed or discouraged.
To help your singer prepare, here are a few helpful questions you can ask them:
Can you switch into your “singing voice” (sometimes called “head voice” or “light voice”)?
Can you hear a note and sing it back accurately?
Can you sing a simple scale going up, like a musical staircase?
If their voice is changing, can they access both low and high notes with comfort? (This takes time and practice—progress matters more than perfection!
Can they do all of these things on their own, without someone else singing with them?
We aim to create a joyful, confidence-building experience for all our singers, and the audition helps us ensure just that!
Audition component 1: Pitch Matching
Students will be played two notes melodically (not at the same time) on the piano and asked to sing them back. Ascending and descending patterns by step, skip, and leap may all be used. Multiple patterns will be given.
The above video may help your singer practice the skill of matching pitch.
Audition Component 2: Ascending Scale
Students will be asked to sing a scale with help from the piano. A starting pitch will be chosen to match the vocal register of the auditioner.
Using solfege ("do re mi, etc.") is not necessary. Students are welcome to sing on any syllable that is comfortable ("la" is common).
Audition Component 3: Independent Singing
Auditioning singers will be asked to sing Take Me Out To The Ballgame with piano accompaniment. The purpose of this component is to evaluate a singer's sense of tonality, time, vocal quality, and indepedence.
The following video may useful for your singer's practice. Please note that during the audition a piano will be used to support singers, NOT this video.
