What Shell ID does
Shell ID uses an AI model to identify sea shells from photos and shows reference information about them, including material from Wikipedia and the World Register of Marine Species. The result is an informed suggestion, not a certified determination.
Results can be wrong
Identifications, confidence labels, alternatives, reference facts and values are generated automatically and may be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Do not rely on the app alone for decisions about collecting, buying, selling, eating or handling shells or the animals that live in them. Verify important results with an expert and follow the laws that protect wildlife, beaches and marine areas where you are.
Your license
We give you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to install and use the app on Apple devices that you own or control. You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer or resell the app, automate requests to it, or use it for anything unlawful.
Free use, subscriptions and purchases
The app includes a limited number of free identifications. Unlimited use is available through an auto-renewing weekly or yearly subscription, which may start with a free trial, or through a one-time lifetime purchase, all sold by Apple through the App Store. Payment is charged to your Apple ID when you confirm the purchase, or when a free trial ends. A subscription renews automatically at the same price and period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel it in your App Store account settings. Refunds are handled by Apple under its policies.
Your photos and content
You keep all rights to the photos and notes you create. You give us and our AI service provider permission to process the photos you choose to submit, solely to produce the identification and related content for you, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Reference photos and third-party content
Some reference text and photos come from openly licensed sources such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and WoRMS, remain the property of their authors, and are shown with their credits and licenses. The rest of the app is our property or used under license.
Availability and changes
Identification and reference information need an internet connection and depend on third-party services that may be slow, rate-limited or unavailable at times. We may change, add or remove features, and may stop supporting older iOS versions or the app itself.
No warranty
The app is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising from use of or reliance on the app. Our total liability for any claim related to the app is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim.
Termination
You may stop using the app and delete it at any time. We may end your access if you break these Terms. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as No warranty and Limitation of liability, survive termination.
Apple
These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app, is not responsible for claims relating to it, and is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms. Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The current version with its effective date is always published on this page. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
