We are asking those with an existing relationship with the University of Sheffield’s East Asian Studies programmes and others who support our campaign if you can help us reinforce the messages we are pushing internally.
Please write to the University of Sheffield Vice Chancellor Professor Koen Lamberts (vc@sheffield.ac.uk) and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Vice President Susan Fitzmaurice (vp-arts-humanities@sheffield.ac.uk) and cc SheffieldNeedsEastAsianStudies@gmail.com
We’d like you to include in your message the following:
Who you are (or what the organisation you represent is and does)
Why Sheffield’s East Asian Studies is important to you and your organisation
Why management's plans will damage EAS at Sheffield, and particularly any reasons why they may cause you or your organisation to reconsider working with Sheffield
A call for university leaders to rethink their plans and work with the EAS team to imagine a better future for EAS at Sheffield
A request to meet with the Vice-Chancellor to outline your concerns in person or online
A note that says you have authorised your concerns to be made public (if possible) so that we can use any quotes in our campaign materials
Time is of the essence as the university is moving quickly to make changes that will be difficult to reverse. So please do send any letters as soon as you can, preferably before the end of January 2025. If you have any questions about this document or what is happening at Sheffield, please email SheffieldNeedsEastAsianStudies@gmail.com
While individual and personalised letters are most helpful, you can also indicate your support via this online petition. Please add your name and circulate to students, alumni, partners, and any contacts who know the importance of maintaining, and growing, East Asian Studies at Sheffield.
