Drew earned his PhD in Neuroscience in 2026 as a doctoral student in the Sheffield Lab through the Vanderbilt Medical Scientist Training Program . He is interested in a career as a psychiatrist-scientist, studying the neurobiological mechanisms underlying interoceptive deficits in psychosis and working clinically with this population. For his dissertation, he studied the insular cortex in individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders using a novel cardiac interoceptive fMRI paradigm. He hopes to extend this program of research to understand how interoceptive processing informs symptoms of serious mental illness and how the insula can be used as a therapeutic target for intervention in psychosis. Prior to joining the Vanderbilt MD/PhD program, Drew earned his bachelor's degree in Neuroscience at Northwestern University in 2018 and completed a two-year postbaccalaureate research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health in 2020.
