Growing up in Devon, our founder Tom Hemington has been an outdoor enthusiast from an early age. From traversing Dartmoor bogs, navigating misty moors or diving into the ocean, Tom was always found outside.
He was known locally for his boundless energy that helped him be a Devon champion for several years in 800m & 1500m whilst also representing the county in cross country at numerous English School events.
After choosing to study in Sheffield given its proximity to the Peak District, Tom continued to develop his love for adventure. Weekdays were spent running, walking and climbing either in the Peaks, at the Foundry, The Edge or Matrix bouldering walls. Weekends were for trips to the Lake District, Wales or winter mountaineering in the Scottish highlands.
Mountain marathons became the norm, where Tom's best position was 2nd in the Lowe Alpine Mountain Mountain, narrowly missing out on 1st after a navigational mishap. The prize money bought 2 outdoor chairs, that he still has to this day, 19 years later!
As career and family life took hold, Tom tussled with the constant desire to be outdoors, exercising enough to feel tired. Sheffield had become his home, but the realisation dawned that there had to be more. Having organised walks and suggested routes to friends for years, Tom decided to take the next step in inspiring others to take on their own adventures.
Fuelled by the desire to have regular opportunities to tell stories, ask other outdoor enthusiasts questions and ultimately, be inspired to continue getting out into the UK's wild spaces. Adventures are now solo, with friends or the family.
The SAS as it has become known, is the perfect place to spark your next adventure.
