Shawn M. Chartrand (he/they). I joined the School of Environmental Science [EVSC] at Simon Fraser University as a Limited-term Researcher in July 2019, with a core responsibility to teach graduate courses and advise students within the Masters of Ecological Restoration program. More recently I [re]joined EVSC as an Assistant Professor in July 2021. I received my PhD from the University of British Columbia in Physical Geography with Marwan Hassan and Mark Jellinek, and my MSc in Geological Sciences from Case Western Reserve University with Peter Whiting. My doctoral research characterizes pool-riffle formation and maintenance along river reaches that have channel width variations at the scale of a few average widths, and includes a series of flume experiments understood through scaling theory. My masters research characterizes the geometric structure of step-pool mountain streams located within the granitic batholith of central Idaho, U.S.A., and includes fieldwork on over 90 different step-pool segments scattered across a couple hundred square kilometres of Idaho back country. Following my PhD I held a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada during which time I worked at Vanderbilt University with David Jon Furbish on sediment transport theory. Complementing my research career is 20 years of experience working as a professional hydrologist and geomorphologist for Balance Hydrologics in Berkeley, CA, USA.

Current Members:

  • Sarah Zwiep: Sarah is an undergraduate computing science major at Simon Fraser University. Sarah, me and David Jon Furbish have been collaborating on the development of a particle scale transport model built with a stochastic perspective. The .gif playing on the home page is an output from Sarah's model. Sarah received an undergraduate research award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada as part of our collaboration. Sarah will be presenting the model during #AGU21 in the granular session EP45B-1520.
