I received my M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University and my Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I currently work as Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of English at National Taipei University of Technology. I am an experimental phonetician with a focus on phonetic and sociophonetic variations in speech production and perception, as well as second language speech learning and training. A notable aspect of my research has concentrated on the articulation, acoustics, and perception of Mandarin coronal (alveolar, retroflex, and palatal) consonants.

In my current research project (funded by Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council), I investigate how adaptiveness and learners' characteristics (aptitude and second-language proficiency) condition the efficacy of L2 high-variability phonetic training.
