Health and Safety in the Workshop
Upon entering the garage, clients MUST first go to reception, and stay behind the barrier tape. Clients should be aware of where they stand as that there may be spillages on the floor that could potentially be a slip hazard. Additionally, clients should be vigilant as cars may be moved in/out or throughout the garage, and if they want to go further into the garage to view their vehicle, then they MUST wear one of the high-visibility safety jackets hung up on the wall between the bathroom areas.
What is COSHH?
COSHH is the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. By law, we are required to adequately control exposure to materials in the workplace that causes ill health. Many materials or substances at the workplace could harm your health. This includes, dusts, gases, fumes, liquids, and harmful micro-organisms that can cause infection, an allergic reaction, or are toxic. Harmful substances can be present in anything from cleaners, solder fume, or waste.
For example:
Dusty or fume-laden air can cause lung diseases when exposed to the fumes let off from welding for an extended period of time.
Metalworking fluids can grow bacteria and fungi which cause dermatitis and asthma.
Benzene in crude oil can cause leukaemia.
Substances could also be flammable or emit flammable vapour.
Ill health caused by these substances used at work is preventable. Many substances can harm your health, but when used properly, they almost never do.
What are Safety Data Sheets?
Products we use may be 'dangerous for supply'. These products include common substances in everyday use such as bleach, solvent, or fillers. When a product is 'dangerous for supply', by law, the supplier will provide us with a safety data sheet. These documents can be hard to understand, with little information on measures for control. However, to find out about health risks and emergency situations, concentrate on:
Sections 2 and 16 of the sheet will provide you with information about the dangers of the product.
Sections 4 - 8 will provide you information about emergencies, storage, and handling.
Clients typically do not need to view safety data sheets as they are primarily used by the establishment.
