Shasta College Faculty Association Elections
Spring 2026
Candidate Statements:
Candidate for President: Kylee Duran Cox
Hello Colleagues,
Like many of you, I teach because I care about our students, our colleagues, and the communities we serve—and I believe our association is one of the strongest tools we have to protect that work. To continue to support that work, I am running for Faculty Association President.
I care deeply about our campus, our region, and the people we serve. Since 2019, I have been part of our union work as a notetaker and member of the negotiations team, and last year I had the opportunity to serve as lead negotiator, a role I will continue in for this next round. For the past two years, I have also served as Vice President 2, supporting colleagues with contract interpretation and grievances, which has given me a clearer sense of both our challenges and our strengths as a faculty community.
More important to me than past roles or titles is the kind of environment we create together. I care about helping our work environment become as healthy, financially rewarding, and equitable as it can be, and about making sure people feel supported. I welcome thoughtful collaboration with other campus stakeholders and our wider community, and I see our association’s role as part of that shared work. If elected, I would do my best to listen carefully, lead with humility, and respond to our members’ needs with fairness, transparency, and compassion.
Sincerely,
Kylee Cox

Candidate for VP2: Alan Spivey
Hello Faculty Association!
I am entering my name for the position of VP#2 in the upcoming election.
I have served the association previously as a member of 3 different contract negotiation teams over a span of 12 years and served as association VP for one term. I have had the honor of representing Part-Time faculty as a member of the Academic Senate for 11 years, and as a representative of ACSS on the Curriculum Committee for 10 years. I represented Shasta College as the voting delegate to the Plenary of the State Academic Senate in the Fall of 2025, and will do so again in the Spring of 2026. I understand that VP 2 is involved with issues of grievances to the contract, and as a member of the negotiating teams I wrote many of the articles in our contract (especially those pertaining to part-time faculty), so I think I have appropriate knowledge of the contract to serve our members effectively. I sincerely hope you will entrust me with this responsibility.
Thank You,
Alan Spivey
Candidate for VP2: Jessica Colwell
I am running for the position of VP 2 to contribute my background in technical precision and objectivity to the management of our contract. As an instructor of Human Anatomy, I am trained to know complex structures inside and out. A major part of my work is taking the often difficult language of my field and translating it into clear, accessible information for my students. I believe this translates directly to the role of VP 2: managing a labor agreement requires that same ability to know the "structures" of our contract and to communicate those details clearly when a dispute arises.
The duties of the VP 2 and Grievance Officer require a methodical, evidence-based approach. My science background allows me to look at a situation with objectivity, analyze the facts, and find a resolution. I intend to bring that same level of scrutiny to our contract, ensuring every grievance is backed by consistency and a precise reading of the text.
To ensure that I am fully prepared for these responsibilities, I have committed to serving as the notetaker for our upcoming negotiations. This will allow me to build a foundational understanding of our contract language as it is developed, providing a direct transition into the role of 'Contract Expert'.
My goal is to provide our members with fair, organized, and objective support, ensuring that the administrative side of our union is handled with the same professionalism I bring to the laboratory and the classroom.
Thank you for your consideration!
Jessica Colwell
Candidate for Treasurer: Kimberly Carlson
Dear Colleagues,
I am running for the Faculty Association Treasurer. It would be a pleasure to serve on the board for the Faculty Association. This past year, I have been the Part-Time Faculty Association Representative. During this year, I attended the CTA Conference in Las Vegas and attended many of the FA meetings. I believe supporting faculty is key to maintaining a strong institution that educates and supports students.
I am the Student Learning Coordinator for Shasta College. In this role, I have had the opportunity to work with many faculty to ensure academic integrity and success within each department.
I have over ten years of experience teaching in the English Department. I have taught English C1000, English 1B, English 1C, Creative Writing, and I have also taught several sections of English as a Second Language. Teaching such various content has enabled me to work with diverse students at Shasta College.
Furthermore, I am the Treasurer for Shasta High School Sports Booster. In this role, I am responsible for maintaining all the Sports Booster’s financial records. I am required to reconcile financial accounts every month.
If elected Treasurer, I will focus on responsible financial stewardship, transparency, and clear communication about how Faculty Association resources are managed. As part-time faculty, I am seeking opportunities to share my talents with the college and our students. It would be an honor to serve in this role and contribute to the continued strength of the Shasta College Faculty Association.
Thank you,
Kimberly Carlson
Candidate for Treasurer: Jacquelyn Horton
I, Jacquelyn Horton am seeking reelection as Treasurer of the Shasta College Faculty Association. For the past five years, I have proudly served in this role, working to strengthen our union’s financial stability while supporting the needs of our members.
During my tenure, I have increased our association’s reserves from $15,000 to $40,000 by promoting thoughtful, strategic spending, and encouraging our leadership to prioritize long-term sustainability. At the same time, I have remained committed to ensuring our resources directly benefit our members—supporting participation in union conferences and investing in the faculty who do work for our union, including stipends for officers and hourly wages for grievance work.
As Treasurer, I have developed and maintained budgets that accurately reflect projected revenue and expenses, ensuring that we consistently operate within our means and spend responsibly. Beyond my financial responsibilities, I have supported and advised three past union presidents—Tom Martin, Liz Waterbury, and Aaron Maready—providing continuity, insight, and institutional knowledge.
My involvement extends beyond the Treasurer role. I have participated in multiple work groups that have come out of negotiations and have presented workshops to help faculty better understand their rights and responsibilities, with a particular focus on supporting part-time instructors. I also represent ACSS in the Academic Senate, where I often serve as an informal liaison between the union and the Senate.
I have also served on our Political Action Committee (PAC) for the last six years, helping to vet candidates for the Shasta College Board of Trustees and making recommendations regarding endorsements and financial support to the executive committee. Using my treasurer and financial knowledge to make recommendations of how much financial support were can offer, in order to spend our limited PAC funds wisely.
I have also organized and hosted our major annual events, including the Fall Tailgate Party and the Spring Tenure Celebration. By applying my event planning experience, I have made these gatherings engaging and enjoyable while keeping costs low and maximizing their value to our members.
Serving the faculty of Shasta College has been both a privilege and a responsibility I take seriously. Our union exists to protect, advocate for, and ensure equitable labor practices for all faculty, I am very proud of the work I have done and hope to continue representing the wonderful faculty at Shasta College.
I ask for your support in this election. I will bring the same energy and passion I have brought to this position for the last five years to the next two-year term. My experience, strong record of fiscal stewardship, leadership, dedication, and a deep understanding of our organization’s history and goals are the reason you should honor me with your vote.
Thank you so much.
Jacquelyn Horton
