Sharp countertop microwave ovens from Sharp dominate the market with the R-CD2200M winning for its commercial-grade power and durability. If you need a sleek, hidden appliance that fits modern cabinetry, the SMD2470ASY drawer series is the smarter alternative.
• Sharp R-CD2200M — best for high-volume food service and heavy-duty cooking; pick this if you need 2200 watts of raw power and programmable memory pads for consistent bulk heating.
• Sharp SMD2470ASY — best for seamless kitchen integration and ergonomic access; pick this if you want a built-in drawer solution that opens smoothly without bending over.
• Sharp SMC1585BW — best for versatile home baking and roasting; pick this if you need convection capabilities to turn your microwave into a true oven in white.
• Sharp SMD2470AH — best for modern aesthetics and smart lighting; pick this if you prefer a black stainless finish that matches contemporary appliances while offering drawer convenience.
• Sharp SMD2489ES — best for voice-controlled hands-free operation; pick this if you want Alexa integration and an easy-wave touchless opening feature for busy kitchens.
• Sharp SMC0760KB — best for small dorms or limited counter space; pick this if you need a compact footprint under one cubic foot with essential cooking functions.
• Sharp SMC1662KS — best for large family meals and rapid reheating; pick this if you require maximum interior volume and sensor cooking presets for everyday dishes.
• Sharp SMC0962KS — best for balanced performance in standard kitchens; pick this if you want a mid-size capacity with full power levels and a clean LED interface.
This unit is not your average kitchen appliance; it is a commercial-grade workhorse designed for environments where reliability matters more than style. The 2200-watt output is staggering compared to residential models, delivering intense heat that cooks through thick portions instantly. It features a robust stainless steel interior and exterior, built specifically to withstand the rigors of constant use without showing wear or degrading in performance.
I recommend this model for professional chefs, cafeteria staff, or even home cooks who regularly prepare large batches of food. The dual touchpads allow two people to operate the machine simultaneously, which is a game-changer during rush hours. With ten pre-programmed memory pads and the ability to store up to 100 custom memories, you can lock in the perfect settings for every dish on your menu. The four-stage programming feature lets you adjust power levels and times precisely, ensuring that delicate sauces don't burn while dense meats thaw properly.
The double and triple quantity pads are particularly useful when you need to scale a recipe up without recalculating time manually. However, the sheer size and weight of this unit make it impractical for a standard home kitchen. It requires a dedicated counter space and significant electrical capacity. If you do not have a commercial setting or a very large workspace, this powerful beast might be overkill and difficult to fit comfortably.
The SMD2470ASY redefines how we interact with microwaves by moving the cavity down to waist level. Instead of reaching up into a hot cabinet or bending down to a low shelf, this drawer system slides out smoothly, allowing you to place and remove dishes with natural ease. The concealed control panel flips open to a comfortable 45-degree angle, keeping the front of the kitchen looking clean and uncluttered while providing an easy-to-read digital display when needed.
This is the ideal choice for homeowners who value ergonomics and a streamlined aesthetic. The 1.2 cubic feet of interior space is surprisingly generous, easily accommodating a four-quart casserole dish or a twenty-ounce beverage. The automatic drawer system closes hands-free, meaning you can keep your hands free to handle heavy pots or wet towels without touching the door. It saves prep and cleanup time because the location is intuitive and accessible for everyone in the household, including children and elderly relatives.
The trade-off here is installation complexity. Unlike a box you simply plug in, this unit is designed to be built into cabinetry, requiring specific cutout dimensions and potentially professional installation. It also lacks the raw wattage of the commercial model, operating at 950 watts, which is standard for residential use but slower for massive defrosting tasks. If you cannot install a built-in unit, this design will not work for your setup.

This model stands out primarily because it combines microwave technology with convection cooking, effectively turning a single appliance into a dual-purpose oven. The convection feature allows you to roast, bake, and brown foods, adding a layer of versatility that standard microwaves simply cannot match. You can crisp up a pizza crust or roast a chicken with the same precision as a traditional oven, all within the same timeframe.
I see this as the perfect solution for small apartments or kitchens where space is at a premium and you cannot justify having two separate appliances. The white finish offers a clean, classic look that blends well with many decor styles. While the data indicates this is a refurbished unit tested to work like new, the core functionality remains intact, offering the same advanced cooking modes as a brand-new model. The auto-defrost function handles frozen items efficiently, ensuring they thaw quickly before you begin cooking.
The main limitation is the refurbishment status. While the manufacturer certifies it to look and work like new, buyers must be comfortable purchasing a restored item rather than a pristine factory-sealed one. Additionally, convection cooking often takes longer than pure microwave heating, so it is not a replacement for speed when you just need to reheat leftovers. If you prioritize speed over the ability to bake, a standard microwave might serve you better.
The SMD2470AH brings the same ergonomic benefits of the drawer system but wraps it in a sophisticated black stainless steel finish. This colorway is designed to match high-end appliances while standing out against lighter cabinetry, offering a contemporary look that feels both modern and durable. Like its silver counterpart, it features the automatic drawer system that opens smoothly and closes hands-free, making meal preparation a fluid experience.
This unit is best for those who want the convenience of a built-in drawer without compromising on style. The concealed control panel with the 45-degree viewing angle ensures that the interface is always ready when you need it but invisible when it isn't. The interior cavity dimensions remain spacious enough for large casseroles, proving that the sleek exterior does not sacrifice internal utility. The digital LCD display provides clear feedback on cooking times and power levels.
However, the black stainless finish may show fingerprints or smudges more readily than brushed steel or solid colors, requiring more frequent wiping to maintain its polished appearance. Furthermore, like all built-in drawers, it demands precise cabinetry modifications. If your kitchen layout does not support a cutout or if you prefer a portable unit, this model will not fit your needs. It is a specialized solution for a specific type of renovation or kitchen design.
This model pushes the boundaries of kitchen technology by integrating seamlessly with smart home ecosystems. It works directly with Amazon Alexa, accepting over 35 voice commands to start, stop, or adjust cooking times without ever touching the controls. The "Easy Wave Open" feature adds another layer of convenience, allowing you to open the drawer with a simple hand gesture, which is incredibly useful when your hands are full of groceries or ingredients.
I recommend this for tech-savvy users who want their kitchen to feel futuristic and responsive. The modern edge-to-edge black glass design looks sleek and high-tech, hiding the controls until you activate them. The concealed touch glass controls sit at a convenient angle, making interaction effortless even if you are wearing gloves or have wet hands. The integration with the Sharp Kitchen App further expands its capabilities, allowing for remote monitoring and control.
The reliance on smart connectivity means you need a stable Wi-Fi network to unlock its full potential. If your internet connection is spotty, some features may become inaccessible, though basic manual operation remains functional. Additionally, the complex electronics and touch interfaces may require more careful cleaning than physical buttons. For those who prefer analog simplicity, the learning curve and dependency on apps might feel unnecessary.
For those with limited square footage, the SMC0760KB is a masterclass in efficiency. Its compact 0.7 cubic foot capacity fits easily on crowded countertops, in dorm rooms, or in office breakrooms where space is a luxury. Despite its small size, it delivers 700 watts of power, sufficient for most daily reheating and cooking tasks. The gray interior and white LED display give it a fresh, modern look that belies its utilitarian purpose.
This is my go-to recommendation for students, RV owners, or anyone living in a studio apartment. The 10-inch carousel turntable ensures that food heats evenly despite the smaller cavity. Ten power levels provide granular control, preventing overheating of delicate foods. Features like the "+30 seconds" key and express cook allow for quick adjustments without navigating complex menus. The child lock adds a necessary safety layer for households with curious kids.
The primary trade-off is capacity. You simply cannot fit a large turkey or a deep-dish pizza inside this unit. It is strictly for individual servings, side dishes, or beverages. If you cook for a family of four or frequently prepare large meals, this model will frustrate you with its cramped interior. It is a niche product designed for specific constraints, not a general-purpose powerhouse.
When you need to feed a crowd, the SMC1662KS steps up with a generous 1.6 cubic feet of interior space. This family-sized capacity allows you to cook whole chickens, large casseroles, or multiple plates of food simultaneously. The 1100-watt output ensures that this larger volume is heated quickly and thoroughly, avoiding the cold spots that often plague bigger units. The removable 13.6-inch carousel turntable accommodates oversized dinnerware with ease.
I believe this is the best choice for active households that value speed and volume. The sensor cook technology automatically adjusts time and power based on the moisture content of the food, taking the guesswork out of reheating. Six presets cover popular menu items, streamlining the process for busy weeknights. The blue LED display adds a touch of elegance, while the stainless steel exterior resists stains and fingerprints better than many other finishes.
The downside is its substantial footprint. At nearly 22 inches wide and over 17 inches deep, it dominates any counter it touches. It requires a dedicated spot away from other appliances to ensure proper ventilation. If your kitchen is already cluttered or has limited counter depth, this unit might feel overwhelming. It is a premium option for those who prioritize capacity over saving space.
The SMC0962KS strikes a balance between the compact and the family-sized, offering a 0.9 cubic foot capacity that suits most standard kitchens. It delivers 900 watts of power, providing a good middle ground for speed and versatility. The 10.6-inch carousel turntable handles typical dinner plates and bowls perfectly, ensuring even heating for everyday meals. The gray interior and white LED display create a clean, unobtrusive look that fits various decor styles.
This model is ideal for couples or small families who need a reliable daily driver without the bulk of a larger unit. The 10 power levels and 2-stage cooking capability offer flexibility for everything from defrosting meat to simmering sauces. Express cook allows for instant starts up to six minutes, which is handy for quick snacks. The weight and time defrost functions ensure accurate thawing, preserving the texture of your ingredients.
While it offers excellent versatility, it lacks the massive capacity of the 1.6 cu. ft. model and the specialized features of the commercial unit. It is a solid, no-frills performer that gets the job done well. However, if you frequently cook large roasts or need advanced programming, you might find it slightly limiting. It is a safe, practical choice for the average homeowner who wants quality without excess.
We compared published specifications, feature sets, and design intent across the entire Sharp lineup. Our ranking reflects independent editorial judgment based on how these technical details translate to real-world utility. No brand paid for placement, and our selection prioritizes functionality over marketing claims.
Most Sharp models include sensor cooking and auto-defrost features that optimize energy use by stopping the cycle once the target temperature or state is reached.
Built-in drawer models like the SMD series require specific cabinetry cutouts and often professional installation to ensure safety and proper ventilation.
A convection microwave includes a fan and heating element that circulates hot air, allowing you to bake and roast, whereas a regular microwave only uses radiation to heat food.
