Our Mission

Shark Spotting with Drones is a research project sponsored by the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo College of Engineering. Our project focuses on implementing a trained neural network to recognize and learn about sharks and other marine life in an effort to make the ocean safer for everyone.

Using drones to collect data

Flying drones over the coastline allows us to capture a birds-eye view of things we might not otherwise see in and around the waves.

Training a model to recognize sharks

Training a neural network with a sufficient data set allows the model to differentiate between sharks and other animals in drone footage.

Developing an interface for marine biologists

Making AI accessible to disciplines outside of Computer Science and Machine Learning.
