If your organization uses SharePoint, you can use it to store your OneNote notebooks in a central place for your whole team. Whenever you or someone you work with changes the content in a notebook, OneNote automatically saves and syncs the notes on SharePoint.

Does anyone know how to 'Pin' a OneNote Notebook that is stored in Sharepoint? I can open/edit/save a notebook stored on Sharepoint. What I can't figure out how to do is Pin it so I can easily access it again without having to always open it through the Sharepoint website. (Pinning works fine on locally and network drive stored notebooks, my only problem is with Sharepoint notebooks).

I believe the quick link web part is making a shortcut in the browser inside of Sharepoint - correct? Same thing with the link, it sends alerts about changes to the Notebook, you still have to go to a website or type in a direct http address to get to the shared notebook.

Other shared notebooks (like ones stored on a network drive) you can pin directly in OneNote so you can access it without navigating to the network drive first. I'm trying to do a simular action, but now with notebooks stored on SharePoint.

I'm attempting to educate our users on the appropriate use of SharePoint and OneDrive. There are a lot of users that would like to move OneNote notebooks from their OneDrive to a SharePoint site. I'm attempting to do this using the "copy to" function on the web. It appears to work great, however upon copying the file it breaks the OneNote notebook up into multiple files and puts them in a folder. Any idea why this is happening? I've seen this happen when moving the location via OneNote as well. I've had to resort to having users create a new OneNote and copy sections into it. This can be painful. Having multiple files doesn't seem to affect the functionality of the Notebook, however it's confusion every user that attempts it. Any ideas?

I agree with @Loryan Strant - I advise our users to first create a new notebook in the location where they want it and then use the OneNote desktop client to move sections from the old notebook to the new one.

I recommend you turn off Auto-Sync before copying large numbers of sections from one notebook to another. When you're all done, turn auto-sync back on and leave things alone until OneNote finishes updating. This will prevent OneNote trying to sync moving targets while you are moving the sections from one notebook to another.

Also, after turning off auto-sync, if you have a large number of sections to move, it is helpful to add Section Groups to the old notebook, and move all of the sections under the Section Groups. You can them move entire Section Groups from the old notebook to the new, as opposed to having to move them one at a time, since there is no Click to allow the selection of multiple sections to move all at once.

I have a team site that was created in the Admin Centre so it does not have a Group associated with it. When the site was created there was a OneNote notebook as part of the site. Someone has deleted the link for it from the menu bar on the left, so how can you navigate to it from the site to 'reconnect' it? I can't work out where the site OneNote is stored.

In 2018, a multinational company migrated from OneNote to SharePoint. This led to greater efficiency as employees could collaboratively edit notebooks without worrying about version control or accessibility.

Migrating OneNote to SharePoint brings many advantages. It offers centralized document management, enabling users to locate and access notes from anywhere. It facilitates collaboration, with multiple members working on the same notebook. Plus, its search function helps users quickly find information. Furthermore, SharePoint provides security measures with customizable access controls.

No, moving OneNote to SharePoint should not affect the formatting or content of your notebooks. The transition is designed to be seamless, and your notebooks should retain all their original formatting and content.

You will need the necessary permissions to access both OneNote and SharePoint in order to move notebooks. If you do not have the required permissions, you may need to contact your IT department or SharePoint administrator for assistance.

Yes, you can still access your OneNote notebooks after moving them to SharePoint. SharePoint provides online access to your notebooks, allowing you to view, edit, and collaborate on them from any device with an internet connection.

After moving OneNote to SharePoint, your local copies of the notebooks will no longer be synced with the SharePoint version. However, you can still access and update your notebooks through the SharePoint site.

In Microsoft SharePoint with the OneNote 2016 desktop client, you can't sync a notebook by selecting View Sync Status > Sync All. Additionally, you receive error messages that mention the "0xE40200B4" and "0x800700DF" error codes.

Applications call the OneNote REST API to create or access OneNote content in Office 365. Sometimes the OneNote API calls can fail when they are executed against SharePoint document libraries that contain a large number of items (items can be folders or files, some of which could be OneNote entities such as notebooks, sections or section groups).

After you have reduced the notebook count to under 5,000, rerun the tool to make sure the notebook count is less than 5,000. Ideally you should keep this number below 5,000 so that you can have enough room to create new notebooks. If the notebook count in the document library crosses 5,000 again, you will start seeing the OneNote API failures and you will need to come back here and take the same remedial steps.

In our institute, we use OneDrive / Sharepoint from Microsoft to share files with each other. I am also sharing my Jupyter notebooks - with extension *.ipynb - there. Unfortunately, when one clicks on such a file the message "Hmm... looks like this file doesn't have a preview we can show you" appears. In my case I developed my notebooks with python. It's not necessary that my colleagues can run the notebook, but it would indeed be much easier to be able to install a kind of plugin for previewing on the Sharepoint server. Is there any product that can work like this? Otherwise I'll have to always export the file to HTML or so :-(

Unfortunately, there isn't any good news so far. Such a plugin seems to be unavailable as yet. For the meantime, I have automated the exporting of the notebooks to HTML on my Windows 10 machine as follows:

I have been trying almost all day to get a new notebook in OneNote to create itself on SharePoint so that it can then be shared. I eventually want to change a shared oneNote that is currently on SkyDrive to our SharePoint site Every time I get a message like:

The specified location is not available.

You do not have permissions to modify the specified location.

The path or notebook name contains invalid characters.

The combined path and notebook name exceeds the maximum path length.

I've got a user who wishes to share a OneNote notebook with other users. The one caveat is that he was different users to have access to different sections within the notebook (ie. User A gets access to one section 1, user B only to section 2, etc.). Is this possible, and how would I go about setting it up? The notebook will be shared with users on SharePoint 2010.

Setting-up different notebooks is indeed the preferred way. But OneNote will respect the permissions that are set on the server. Not the expert, but I believe Sharepoint 2010 allows file-level permissions although it is buried in the UI. On a network share, you want to allow deny read/deny write but you want to allow listing permissions. Not sure if Sharepoint can limit listing permissions but you want to make sure to not disallow listing sections (which means they will all show-up in the UI but some of them will be in error state for the users who do not have access.).

- [Instructor] If you want to have group collaboration in a notebook, creating this in a SharePoint site document library may be the way to go. With the SharePoint site open, select the document library from the navigation panel. From the ribbon at the top, select New, then select OneNote notebook. Enter a name for the notebook, then select Create. The notebook is saved in the document library, and opens in the browser tab. Now you know how to setup a group space for taking notes in SharePoint. e24fc04721
