Assume that you have Microsoft Offices Online in a SharePoint farm. When you open a URL (like ) to a SharePoint document by using the Chrome browser, the document is downloaded directly instead of opening the Office application with a direct connection to the document on SharePoint.

Documents (Word/Excel/PowerPoint files/PDF file types) linked in SharePoint Online pages, navigation menu, lists, etc., open in the browser (or in client application!) directly either in Read-only mode or in Edit mode, based on user permissions. What if you want to force download a file instead of opening it in the browser with Microsoft Office Online applications? Here are some workarounds to generate a link that downloads the document directly (or a force download link).

Sharepoint 2013 Document Download Instead Of Open

I need to do the oposit : when the user open the link i shared, i want the image to be displayed in the sharepoint not downloaded. It works with pdf but i have images (.tiff files) and the link always download the file even if there is &web=1 in the link.

Does someone has a solution ?

Once you paste the copied link into a hyperlink or button or whatever, just remove all text after the ? after the file extension and you get a link that directly downloads the file instead of opening it. Something like the below:

I found this solution here, which I copy pasted from:

 -US/f4f52b57-4e09-4ab3-b89f-0731e5ea684c/sharepoint-online-enable-direct-download-instead-of-opening-document-when-clicking-on-the-link?forum=appsforsharepoint

Less likely is the change in the Site settings themselves. If the default for ALL document libraries has changed to open in client, and you would like the default to be open in browser, you will need to go to Site Settings at the top level site (you need Admin privileges for the top site for this one I believe), then Site Collection Features. Make sure that Office Web Apps is activated, and that Open Documents In Client Applications by Default is not activated.

I have also encountered the same problem. It seems like a chrome update came out and now opening in client app no longer works, all documents open in the web app (despite the default being client app in SP). All users started experiencing the same problem on the same day.

I have a SharePoint document library. Currently, when I select a document , click on "Copy Link" and share the link to users, when user clicks on link, document opens either in Office web apps or Client application depending on library settings. (Copy Link is with setting "Anyone with access can view the document")

the :x:/r/sites/SITENAME/FOLDERNAME/FILENAME.EXTwill work if you are logged in, but for anonymous users just add &download=1 at end of url (or ?download=1 )

I achieve it with the anonymous reply in this thread: -to-sharepoint-documents-set-to-download/m-p/215062

In sharepoint simply choose the "download" option on the file you want the URL for.. chrome opens. Once it has downloaded, click on the chrome menus and choose "downloads", where you'll be presented with your download history (the filename then the download url). You can then copy and paste that url to wherever you want.

Every time I want to edit an Office document, it gets downloaded instead of being 'forwarded' to be opened by Word, Excel, etc. Modifications need to be saved locally and than uploaded afterwards. This is hugely annoying.

It would be better to store the Excel file in SharePoint or OneDrive and instead link to that file in Asana. Therefore, clicking on the attachment will open Excel 365 in your browser where you can make edits directly (along with other members, at the same time) which will be saved instantly & automatically.

Using the Google Chrome browser, a user will attempt to open a link they have saved in a form. In some cases the URL they fetch is not configured to be open in a new tab for the Google Chrome browser, and instead will try to force the user to download the document instead of opening it.

Google Chrome, and possibly Chromium based browsers, are configured in a specific way to search for certain strings to decide what to do with a link when selected. If it is missing the proper string to open the link as a new page then it will by default, attempt to download it as a document.

Is there a way to open Word, Excel, or Powerpoint documents in 'Viewing' mode by default? This option seems to be in online apps only and working in the context of Microsoft Teams (i.e. part of an organisation).

I have found a way around ... site contents, navigate to document library setting, advanced settings and Open in the client application. This works for me due to the formatting of the document and it opening in edit view in the browser was throwing out the document format.

The normal URL for SharePoint includes an action=default field. The URL is not altered by modifying the "Edit/Review/View" button setting, but if you paste the URL into an editor and change that field to action=view, then the doctored URL will always open up in view mode, but will also give you the "Edit document" option on the command bar above the document.

You need to protect the file/document. On Word/Excel online go to File>Info>Protect Workbook/Document. It also has the subtext: To prevent accidental changes, this workbook has been set to open as read-only.

The default view for a document library uses a field called "Name (linked to document with edit menu)" as the link to documents in the library. However, if that's replaced with the field called "Name (linked to document)" in the view, the document will open by default in Viewing mode.

I learned this the hard way while working on a project with remote team members. We had difficulty accessing/editing documents saved on SharePoint. But, when we figured out how to open them in our favorite desktop apps, collaboration became smoother, faster, and more efficient.

SharePoint is a helpful platform for businesses to organize their data, documents, and projects. But, it might be tricky for some users to use. So, we have options for you to open SharePoint files on your desktop app. One way is to use a web browser.

I have been looking to link to a Word file in Microsoft SharePoint so that the document opens online. But every time I use the built-in link creator, users are asked to download the file instead. Other features within SharePoint like the Document Library open Word files in the online version of Word. So it should be possible to do the same with links on a SharePoint web page. Well, there is a way, but it involves a bit more work.

Followed all of the settings and work within sharepoint but when you go to en click on one of the documents there it opens in Edge browser and not in the Office desktop app.

Any idea how to solve this.

To make a better looking file explorer we will place a PDF icon beside each filename in the list and document icon for all other file types that cannot be opened by the PDF viewer. Insert a new Image into the gallery and place it on the left-side of the row.

Have you tried downloading items in Chrome but they open instead of downloading? If you are using Google Chrome as your internet browser and notice this, don't worry, we can help! If the file automatically opens instead of saving when using Chrome, keep on reading or watch this video!

So, if you click "Always open files of this type (even once!)- ... what happens is that the file will automatically open instead of downloading to the folder, and will open in whatever the default program is for the file type. Then, the file automatically opens instead of saving when I download in Chrome

Click on "Settings" and you'll see a new page pop up in your Chrome browser window. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, click Downloads, and clear your Auto Open options. Next time you download an item, it will be saved instead of opened automatically.

Power BI Desktop will then go to the SharePoint site and download the information inside your excel file. For my data I have all the information retained in a table within my excel document. The table name is call MyDataTable. Thus, clicking on the Table link in the MyDataTable row I will be able to open all the data within this table.

Here are the rough steps.

1. Log into the PowerBI.com service

2. Create a new workspace (it takes about 30 mins) for the files option to show up.

3. Then click the ellipsis next to the newly created workspace, this should let you see a item called Files.

4. Click the files option, then a sharepoint page should open up allowing you to add files

5. Place your PBIX file in the sharepoint library

6. Go back to PowerBI.com then open up the workspace

7. Click get data

8. Then click on files

9. You should see a new option for one drive with your workspace name

10. Your PBIX file that you uploaded to the sharepoint workspace should be there. Then you can click the PBIX file there and load it to PowerBI.com.

You upload an excel spreadsheet to your One Drive for Business folder to enable viewing and editing from Excel Online. When you click on the file it downloads to your computer instead of opening up automatically in Excel Online. On closer inspection you may notice that the excel icon is slightly different to the other excel spreadsheets in your account.

Documents cannot be uploaded to a SharePoint document library directly from Power Apps. We will need to create a Power Automate flow to do it instead. Open the Power Automate action from the top menu and select Create a new flow.

You may edit files that are stored in a SharePoint document library if you are the owner of the file or if the owner has given you permission to do so. When you want to edit a file, the file will open in the online version of the application by default.

If the file is a Microsoft file, such as a Word document or PowerPoint presentation, you can instead open it in the corresponding desktop application, such as Microsoft PowerPoint on your desktop. Please note that this is not recommended unless you have checked out the file (see below). 2351a5e196
