FOSTERING A MORE INCLUSIVE WORLD
SHARED GROUND is a community based initiative designed to support neurodivergent children in Sub Saharan Africa by equipping neurotypical individuals--- teachers, caregivers, peers and community members with practical, low cost tools for communication and daily interaction.
While awareness of neurodivergnce is slowly increasing in Sub-saharan Africa, most initiatives focus on defining conditions rather than teaching people how to live alongside neurodivergent individuals in everyday environments. As a result, neurodivergent children often face misunderstanding, punishment, exclusion ad emotional harm, particularly in under-resourced settings where access to behavioral therapy or diagnosis is limited.
SHARED GROUND addresses this gap by shifting the focus from labeling children to adapting environments. Through simple, culturally relevant materials such as pamphlets, posters, and short community sessions, the project teaches practical responses to common behaviors, helping reduce distress and improve quality of life for both neurodivergent children and people around them.
