Call for Debates

Scientific Debates

Engage in a more casual setting while hearing roboticists debate what defines shape change in robotic platforms.

Call for Poster / Live Demo / Short Talk

We are calling for researchers at all career stages to contribute short talks, posters, and live demonstrations at the workshop. Those interested should submit an abstract through the link below. Submissions should be related to shape-morphing soft robots including mechanics, control, computation, actuation, variable stiffness, and sensing, etc. The submission deadline is Wednesday, March 20th, 2024 (11:59 PM, PST).

What defines a shape changing robot? This is an ongoing question that sparks up debate. Even in our own labs, members involved in the same project debate whether our robotic platforms are shape changing. There is no singular definition that covers all shape changing systems. We encourage members from the same lab to present an example of a shape changing robot in their lab and bring up opposing opinions on if the system in question is a shape changing robot. We hope this begins a dialogue toward a more cohesive definition of what it means for a robotic platform to be capable of shape change.
