About me

Shaomin Xiong is currently a technologist at Western Digital Research. His research focuses on the fundamental physics, specifically mechanics, dynamics, design and heat transfer in data storage devices and systems, and applications of artificial intelligence and internet of things to data storage.

Dr. Xiong has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers in renowned journals and conferences, including Nature nanotechnology and IEEE Transactions. He has filed over 30 patents across a variety of areas in data storage devices, systems and AI. He is also an active reviewer for a few journals, conferences and research grant proposals, including IEEE Transactions, European Research Council, etc. He is an associate editor of Microsystem Technologies published by Springer.

Dr. Xiong has received a few awards in the industry, including the best paper award from ISPS and technology innovation award from the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).

Dr. Xiong is an active member in a few professional associations, including IEEE and ASME. Most recently, he has chaired the annual Conference on Information Storage and Processing Systems (ISPS) under ASME. He is the chair of the ISPS division between 2020-2021. He is a committee member of the ASME digitalization group and robotics group.

Dr. Xiong received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (2014) and B.S. from University of Science and Technology of China (2009).
