An interesting cast of story characters to say the least
From the ground up this game was made for cellphone devices in portrait orientation. Something that feels natural in hand. I did not want on screen controls like joysticks or d-pads. The game utilizes more natural ways to go about controlling your character. And most importantly NO Mashing!
Swiping is movement. You can jump by swiping up, down to duck, back to dodge. Familiar to fighting game players is the superjump but in Shaolin Dragon it's a wall jump. To perform a walljump swipe up from a duck. So down then up.
There are different ways to attack. You can tap high or low to strike in the corresponding direction. Hold either of the areas and perform a more powerful charged attack. This is indicated with a filling tea cup. Yes, you pour water into the cup and it becomes the cup.
Touch anything on the screen that's pink and you'll perform a parry. Parrying is a key part of defense. Double taps are also used for different attacks. And throwing a fireball is done with the motion of swiping down then forward with an attack.
The story follows the main character, which you get to name (sort of). Coming back to his homeland, the island of Won Ton, after 7 long years of studying, how will things have changed for him.
You find a mysterious box with a Kung Fu Manual in it. Who put this box there? The search begins. Along this search you meet a beautiful girl who loses her puppy. It's your mission to find the pup, but challenges like ex boyfriends make it harder to do so.
Combo trials in fighting games have always been really fun, sometimes challenging, but always give a sense of accomplishment, requiring true mastery of a character. They range from easy to very difficult and if you choose the "Combo Master reward" option you can make your own combo challenge that will make it in the game.
What's cool about leveling up to a new belt is that you can visually see it on your player character. It's a collection of challenges that do not only require fighting. You're stripped down to only the skills you unlock in the skill tree. Through each stage you can collect powerups like nunchucks, fireworks, extra hearts etc. Make it through and you will be presented with the next belt
As the name suggests, pick your stage and relieve some stress against a punching bag that doesn’t hit back. Try to invent new combos, as the developer I would love to see what you will come up with!
Each sprite is created by me, by hand, in photoshop. NO use of AI whatsoever, in terms of art I do have strong opinions and don't want any part of "AI art". The backgrounds are all made with watercolors and edited digitally to make them more vibrant. Would you like to become a background character, choose the "Background character reward" and we will see how we can get you to become alive in the game as well.
A japanese style vending machine takes blue coins and randomly gives you rewards which could include special Chinese seals. Complete your collection by collecting them all. You can even be apart of the seal collection by choosing the "Seal reward", where we can work on a seal together! Could be a model of you in samurai clothing, a cool pose where you karate kick, or anything else awesome we both agree on. You can even tell me at which probability you would like the seal to drop. So making it super rare or common is an option as well.
Waddup? My name is Vito and I'm a solo indie dev who has spent years working on this project. After briefly having worked as a software developer I quickly realized I wanted to pursue a career as an indie dev. Owww if I could go back to that moment and warn my young grasshopper-self.. The road has been challenging and I mostly got by doing some IT jobs, but mostly art commissions. Even starting an Etsy art shop.
I was always fascinated by ninja turtles and martial arts. And later in life I played a ton of different fighting games, even went to one of the legendary places in New York where they ran local tournaments, which at the time was called NLBC (Next Level Battle Circuit). Mostly when they played Ultra Street Fighter IV.
Art has always been my passion and I hope that shines through in the game.
I released a similar game without story, without combo trials without a lot of the features it has now. It was just an endless, you-against-a-living-punching-bag-fighting-game. Basically, a different game, since the graphics were later updated and adjusted for Shaolin Dragon. The first version called Dragon Shadow Boxing was released during covid, unfortunately not the best time. Life mostly got in the way, but now a million cups of coffees later we get Shaolin Dragon, a complete overhaul, 2.0 version of Dragon shadow boxing. The testers I had playing were very positive, but said it was very hard. Now years later that learning experience of releasing a game helped me shape it to what it is today.
I live in the Netherlands but mostly I'm a kid from a small place Paramaribo, Suriname.
