Shanghai Mahjongg

Shanghai Instructions

Shanghai is a solitaire game using Mahjongg tiles. The object of the game is to remove all the tiles. Remove tiles by touching matching open tiles. Like the card game of solitaire, you might not be able to win.

The tiles are stacked on top of each other, laid out in a pattern representing a turtle. Matching tiles are only removable if they are "open". In landscape orientation, a tile is open if it has no tile to the right or left or on top. In portrait, a tile is open if it has no tile above or below or on top. Tiles on different layers have different colored borders. Borders are not considered for matching. A menu option enables and disables highlighting of open tiles.

Tiles match if they are the same or if they are part of a group. Groups are the Seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) and Flowers (Plum, Iris, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum ("Mum")). Matching tiles are in sets of four.

In addition to the Seasons and Flowers groups, sets include Winds (North, South, East, West), Dragons (Red, Green, White), Bamboo (one through nine), Coins (one through nine) or Circles or Dots, and Faces or Characters (one through nine).

Use the Undo icon to restore tiles you have removed.

Use the Magnifying Glass icon to highlight open tile pairs. Touch it again to show more open pairs.

Use the X icon to start a new game.

The game uses whatever dark or light mode the system is in, but you can use the moon-shaped icon to change that.

The double-arrow icon swaps location of the icons.

This game was inspired by PLATO Mah-Jongg by Brodie Lockard. The dragon shown when you win was drawn by Brodie.
