What is a bearing and what is its relevance in the automobile industry? Bearings are a rolling substance it is used to reduce friction. if the two plain surfaces come over the other, they will slide over it. It may lead to the damaging of metal bodies. Here is the relevance of the bearing as it has a rolling surface it helps to reduce friction. thus, it helps to increase the performance.
Ball-bearing is the most common bearing which is used in moving parts. The ball bearings are available in the spherical, cylindrical, needle, and tapered shapes. The Spherical ball bearings are constructedby placing balls in between the two bearing rings or races. The purpose of this bearing is to reduce rotational friction and increase radial and axial loads. In most of the machines, one race is stationary and the other one is attached to the rotating shaft.
The bearings have inner and outer races and balls are arranged between these races. If the contact angle is less, then the load-carrying capacity will be low. It is available in four common designs angular contact, axial, deep groove, and preloaded pairs. These are the major designs available in the market.
Types of Spherical Ball Bearings
• Angular contact ball bearings – it isused foraxially asymmetric races. This type of bearing is more suitable for the combined loads of radial and axial. The bearings which have larger contact area has more capacity to carry leads.
• Axial or Thrust ball Bearings – it uses side-by-side races. Axial load is transmitted directly through the bearings.
• Deep Groove Pairs – it is a radial bearing. It supports both radial and axial loads without considering the contact angle.
• Preloaded pairs -
Characteristics of Spherical Bearing
The bearings have some characteristics
• The starting friction is lower – as the ball is used, it is rolling in between the two races. So,there is no friction.
• Speed of the movement depends on the design and size, method and type of lubrication, manufacturing accuracy, and load.
• It can carry both radial and axial load at a time
• The rigidity can be improved by preloading
The bearings offer several advantages for your vehicle. As it has a self-lubricating mechanism, it requires very less maintenance. It is easier to assemble. Leaking of lubricants is prevented by sealed raceways. Grease is used as a lubricant so that the chance for firing hazards is very low. Spherical Ball Bearings are used in cargo services, aircraft control, the agriculture industry, heavy types of equipment, and machines. You have to be very careful in selecting the bearings. A wrong selection may lead to the failure of the system.
