Aaron Douglas was born on May 26, 1899 in Topeka, Kansas. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1922. He taught for 2 years before he left to move to New York, where Harlem had a thriving arts scene. Aaron created amazing pieces of art that displayed the struggles African Americans faced, and won awards for works he created for publications. He created Opportunity, the National Urban League's magazine, and The Crisis, put out by the National Association for the Advancement Colored People. He also created a series of murals entitled "Aspects of Negro Life" that featured four panels, each depicting a different part of the African-American experience.
