I am a computational linguist. My research focuses on the application of deep learning and statistical methods to problems in natural language processing and artificial intelligence. My main interest is in the cognitive foundations of natural language. I explore AI models with the aim of using them to illuminate how humans acquire, process, and represent languistic knowledge. I also use these models to explore how humans employ language to solve reasoning tasks. Â
I am currently Professor of Natural Language Processing in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London, and Emeritus Professor of Computational Linguistics in the Department of Informatics at King's College London.
