This semester I have learned so much. My writing has gotten so much better. In high school they didn’t teach us much about writing techniques, so when I took my first writing class in college I was so lost because writing is not one of my best subjects, but with the help of Dr. McGinnis and the writing center I think I have grown as a writer and a student overall.
One of the things Dr. McGinnis has taught me was: how to cite our papers using MLA style. I've never learned how to do this in high school, so when I first learned it I was having trouble, but Dr. McGinnis gave us good tips on how to correctly cite and she also gave us references which were the Purdue Owl writing lab to help us successfully cite our papers and projects. Another way Dr. McGinnis has helped me with my writing by having discussion topics that correspond with our projects. This really helped get a feel on what to do or look for on our projects. We did peer reviews, where other classmates would give us tips on how to make our projects better. I also took Dr. McGinnis' support class for our English 1101 class, in that class we learned things like punctuation, citing images and how to use signal phrasing and in text citing. In the support class we had quizzes that helped me retain the information better. In this class we also had discussions and we gave others classmates ideas on their post. Doing these discussions helped with my critical thinking and it also helped get a better understanding of what article or project we were doing. This has been my first English writing class and I have already learned so much. I can’t wait for my future writing classes so I can learn even more!
