Image processing in Polar/Antarctica oceanography:
Low-cost underwater image acquisition robot.
Sea Ice and Glacier Monitoring - Satellite imagery, including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical images, is processed to track changes in sea ice extent and glacier movement. SAR, in particular, is useful in polar regions due to its ability to penetrate clouds and operate in darkness, which is crucial during polar winters.
Oceanographic Feature Detection - Remote sensing data is processed to observe and analyze oceanographic features such as sea surface temperature, ocean currents, and the distribution of phytoplankton, which are crucial for understanding polar marine ecosystems. Image processing techniques help detect the interactions between ice and ocean, such as basal melting of ice shelves and the formation of polynyas (areas of open water surrounded by sea ice).
Autonomous Data Collection and Analysis - capture high-resolution imagery, which is then processed to map under-ice topography and detect changes in ice structure. This provides valuable data for understanding ice-ocean interactions. Machine learning and deep learning are increasingly being used to automate the analysis of large datasets, enabling the rapid classification and detection of ice features and oceanographic phenomena
4. Image processing in space technology:
Remote sensing and earth observation - Satellites like Landsat and Sentinel use image processing to monitor Earth's surface for environmental changes, deforestation, urban development, and disaster management.
Planetary Exploration - Mars rovers (e.g., Perseverance and Curiosity Rover) use image processing to navigate the Martian terrain and identify geological features. Stereo imaging helps create 3D maps of the surface.
