Reviews of previous classes:
"Shadow Carriers is an essential resource for the scholarship and performance practices associated with ghost stories, and more broadly, the art of storytelling. Last summer, my department was lucky enough to have Zack and Orion give a lecture to our theatre students about the practice, and perhaps most importantly, the ethics around telling such stories about the dead. It changed how our students went about the process of devising a new play, called The Ghost Project. Zack and Orion helped our students understand that ghost stories aren’t just some spooky or arcane genre; rather ghosts – and our relationships to them through memory, nostalgia, and grief – are fundamental aspects of our humanity. The podcast is the perfect alchemy between entertainment and memorialization, between seriousness of purpose and laughing at the absurd, and between understanding that ghost stories are for both the living and the dead."
Christopher Staley, PhD (Assistant Professor of Movement | School of Theatre and Dance)
"Orion created a lively lecture for my writing class via Zoom!
I teach a first-year writing course on the theme of walking and writing, and for our final project, students are creating a guided walking tour. Orion joined us to give students an overview of how he creates and leads walking tours: what to look for in a story strong enough to include, seeking out multiple perspectives, workshopping new stories/tours, paying attention to the needs of different kinds of audiences, and ethical storytelling. It was a lively session that gave us a lot to think about as we launched into the creation of our own. I look forward to inviting Orion back, and I would encourage anyone whose teaching incorporates storytelling to do the same!"
