TWENTY year old jack bailey and his eighteen year old girlfriend anna medford were responsible for a list of impulsive decisions throughout their lives in iron river. both grew up in and out of trouble in the mines, and one hook up that went a little too far ( broken condom, screaming match, the whole nine yards ) led to a shotgun wedding for the ages. in fact, the wedding was such a shotgun affair that anna’s wedding dress was ruined when her water broke, bringing their beautiful daughter rebecca into the world.
REBECCA bailey grew up below the poverty line. she grew up never knowing where her next meal was coming from or how her parents were going to keep a roof over their heads, or anything. she was a chronic worrier even from a young age, making it her job to take care of people in any way that she could with the limited resources she had available. she was described by those around her as scrappy and intuitive, and she was constantly getting herself into trouble to make sure that she and those she cared about had what they needed.
BEX wasn't that close to her parents as she grew up, and she definitely engaged more with her found family from school than she did with them. they were the most important people in her life, and she made a point to do whatever she could to protect them. she was constantly in and out of trouble in school ( the way her parents were before her, an endless unbreakable cycle ) and she ended up dropping out after her sophomore year. school wasn't for her. she didn't see the point, in her eyes? it wasn't like that little piece of paper would do anything. she was destined to spend the rest of her life in the mines.
AND then her parents kicked her out. they were tired of the trouble that came with their sixteen year old daughter, and with her mother being pregnant again? it was like they were pushing the reset button on their family. bex was hurt, but she knew it was easier to just roll with the punches than to dwell on the feelings she was having. she took to couch surfing for a little while, she got herself a job at the local secondhand shop as well as at tina's, and she didn't know what the goal was… well, the goal beyond survival.
THAT was the routine for years, eventually she got a home for herself in the mines, and she managed to get herself down to only working at tina's. she didn't love it, but she didn't hate it either, it was a means to an end and the people she saw were always interesting. she felt like she was in zombie mode. she was running on auto pilot and she was nowhere near the person she had been before… but she had reached a point where survival was the only goal.
THERE was only so much that bex could take of small town life and living to survive. she had no purpose, there was absolutely nothing going on . . . and she didn't know how to deal with it. so instead, bex decided to run. she left her small town of iron river, georgia and made her way all the way up to new york city. she ended up working at a diner in brooklyn, and while it was pretty much the same thing she'd been doing back home? it was new. it was exciting, and bex didn't know what was going to come next.
HUDSON sweeney was a miracle. bex would never call him that to his face, and if someone tried to bring it up, she'd laugh in their face and say they were full of it. however, hudson saved her from being a dead end diner waitress forever. she'd come to brooklyn with no plan whatsoever . . . and she ended up meeting someone who would define her path. after she wore him down a little bit, hudson took her on as his assistant. she quickly left the diner job ( full time, at least, she still picked up shifts here and there ), and she became the overeager assistant at sweeney investigations. she's ready to show the world what she's capable of . . . and hopefully hudson will let her do bigger and better things.
